Two students of Hanoi Medical University were disciplined and dismissed from the position of deputy class monitor for inappropriate statements about patients on social networks.

Two students majoring in Odonto-Stomatology and Midwifery of Hanoi Medical University were disciplined and dismissed from the position of class vice-monitor of academics after inappropriate statements related to patients on social networks.

On August 10, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Dinh Tung - Vice Rector of Hanoi Medical University - said that the school has taken disciplinary action against two students who both managed a TikTok account that caused controversy in recent days.

Among them, the 5th-year male student of the Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery major was reprimanded, and the 2nd-year female student of the Obstetrics and Gynecology major received a warning disciplinary measure. Both were dismissed from their positions as class vice-monitors in academics and had to permanently lock their TikTok accounts. The female student also did not continue to hold the position of head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Club.

The school also assigned officials to monitor and support the two students in the process of overcoming violations.

The incident originated from a video that appeared on social networks at the end of July. In the video, a female student majoring in Obstetrics and Gynecology recounted a hypothetical situation where she was looked down upon by a patient for being a medical student, then wrote content implying that she would arrange the patient's bed in a corner and intentionally take the wrong veins many times.

This content quickly caused debate, many opinions said that the statement was not in line with the standards of learners in the field of health care.

According to Hanoi Medical University, at the time of posting the video, the female student was on summer vacation and did not intern at the hospital. After the incident attracted attention, the student actively removed the content and locked her social media account.

The school believes that the statement may have originated from impulsiveness, with the aim of joking on social networks. However, putting the health and pain of patients into joke content is unacceptable behavior for medical students.

According to Mr. Tung, the above-mentioned TikTok account is managed by two students. Before deciding on the disciplinary form, the school considered the report as well as the learning and training process of the two students. Both previously made many contributions to the activities of the class, Union, Association; some content on the account also contributed to spreading the image of the major and the school.

The incident took place in the context that recently some healthcare students caused controversy about their behavior on social networks. Also in July, Hanoi University of Business and Technology suspended two female students for one year after they livestreamed during clinical practice at the hospital, using vulgar language and making statements threatening to "inject poison" a person they were interacting with.

According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, violating students may be subject to one of four forms of discipline, including reprimand, warning, temporary suspension of study and expulsion.
