There are still many concerns
Dr. Thai Van Tai - Director of the Department of Education and Training (Ministry of Education and Training) - said that in order to effectively exploit facilities and teaching staff and in line with the policy of the 2018 General Education Program and the Education Law, the ministry aims to guide the organization of teaching and learning 2 sessions/day for junior high school and high school students in qualified schools.
According to the 2-session/day program since high school years, Giap Tung Duong - a 12th grade student at Ha Trung High School (Thanh Hoa) said: "Studying 2 sessions/day, the number of lessons is also distributed more evenly, both reducing stress for students and helping them have time to take a break to acquire knowledge".
Understanding the psychology of his peers, Tung Duong said that when implementing 2 sessions/day of teaching, there will be two flows of opinions. For those who are less self-taught, studying 2 sessions/day is supported, they have more time for teachers to pair them, thereby making progress in their studies. However, for those who are self-taught well, sometimes this policy will make them feel constrained.
As a parent with a child studying in Bac Ninh, although supporting the implementation of teaching 2 sessions/day, Ms. Hong Nhung still has some concerns.
"I do not object to the two-session study, but it needs to have a reasonable program, not a cluster. My child is in grade 9 this year, and is in the 10th grade entrance exam preparation stage. If they organize 2 sessions/day without a scientific arrangement program, the children will easily be overloaded. Children also need time to self-study, experience, and play sports to be able to develop comprehensively" - Ms. Nhung shared
Need to pilot before applying
Currently, most secondary and high schools are teaching 1 session/day, the remaining session students are free to carry out learning and playing activities according to personal orientation.
According to Ms. Tran Thi Tho - a teacher at Hoang Van Thu High School (Hanoi), studying 2 sessions/day if organized scientifically will bring many benefits. Students do not have to study too much in a session, but can study 3-4 periods in the morning and 3-4 periods in the afternoon. There are afternoon days off to join clubs, study and play harmoniously. Allocating reasonable learning time will help students absorb better, avoiding fatigue when studying too much in one session.
However, one of the difficulties in widely implementing this policy is the lack of guaranteed facilities. Arranging the curriculum appropriately, without putting pressure on students and teachers is also a difficult problem.
Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper reporter, Prof. Dr. Pham Tat Dong - Advisor of the Vietnam Association for the Promotion of Education - said that there needs to be a pilot before widely applying it. This helps determine which areas can be implemented and which areas are not qualified, thereby having appropriate adjustment plans.
According to Prof. Dr. Pham Tat Dong, implementing 2 sessions/day teaching must clearly identify educational content, not stuffing knowledge. Additional classes each day need to focus on developing practical skills, experience, research, and learning tours. This is an opportunity for comprehensive development for students in accordance with the orientation of the 2018 General Education Program.
Regarding the issue of improving facilities to meet the requirements of 2 sessions/day, according to Prof. Dr. Pham Tat Dong, there needs to be a long-term vision, closely combining the Ministry of Education and Training and localities.
"When building a new school, it is necessary to take into account the two sessions, build space for experience activities. Do not build according to the old model but must conform to the requirements of modern - green schools, digitization and comprehensive development. The Ministry of Education needs a long -term plan, based on the right to empower localities to decide and organize according to its actual conditions. Evaluate.
