Notes before "G-hour
Tomorrow morning, candidates will enter the first exam subject, Literature. In the structure of the high school graduation exam, the social commentary section is always considered an important content, not only helping candidates score points but also creating differentiation between the papers.
According to Ms. Lam Thi Lan Anh, a Literature teacher at Hiep Hoa High School No. 3 - Bac Ninh, to do well in this type of test, students need to combine writing skills with practical observation, critical thinking and understanding of social issues.
The female teacher said that social essays often appear in the form of paragraphs of about 200 words or essays of about 600 words. The content can revolve around ideological issues, morality, life phenomena or stories related to the responsibilities, ideals and aspirations of youth.
The most important thing is to read the problem carefully, correctly identify keywords and key requirements. Many students lose points not because of lack of knowledge but because they have not accurately identified the issue to be discussed" - Ms. Lan Anh shared.
To make the essay persuasive, students need to flexibly apply argumentative operations such as explanation, analysis, proof, comment and rebuttal. According to the teacher, these operations do not exist separately but need to be harmoniously combined to create a coherent essay in terms of both reason and evidence.
One of the common limitations of students is the use of old, listing evidence or lack of analysis.
According to Ms. Lan Anh, instead of trying to memorize too many examples, students should build their own sources of evidence from real life, current issues, examples of overcoming difficulties, community activities or inspiring stories in society.
“The evidence does not need to be many but must be consistent with the argument. With a 200-word paragraph, just one typical example analyzed reasonably will be more effective than giving many scattered evidences,” she said.
In addition, regularly following news, updating issues such as digital transformation, artificial intelligence, environmental protection or positive activities of young people will help students have more practical material for their writing.
According to the female teacher, the current trend of setting questions no longer aims to test rote learning ability but focuses on assessing thinking ability and the ability to apply knowledge to practice. Therefore, students need to boldly express personal opinions based on logical reasoning, instead of relying on available sample essays.
The key to getting high scores lies in understanding the problem correctly, reasoning coherently, providing authentic evidence and expressing personal opinions. When well prepared, the social commentary question can completely become an exam part to help candidates create an advantage in their work" - Ms. Lan Anh emphasized.
