Phong Tho commune has more than 26.9km of border, with more than 6,000 students distributed in dozens of schools.
Remote terrain, many deep abysses and dangerous streams make the journey to class for students not without difficulties. Meanwhile, facilities and semi-boarding conditions are still limited.

The desire for a synchronous boarding school is realized from the policy of building inter-level boarding general schools in border communes.
From the proposal of Lai Chau province, Vietnam National Group of Industry and Energy (Petrovietnam) accompanies and sponsors resources with local budgets to build the project.

PetroVietnam - Phong Tho Primary and Secondary Boarding School has a total investment of 280 billion VND, built on an area of 6.15ha, with a total floor area of more than 27,000m2.
The project includes 30 theoretical classrooms, 16 subject classrooms, dormitory, dining hall, sports area, swimming pool and synchronous equipment system.

Started on November 3, 2025, the project faces many challenges when raw material prices fluctuate, labor is scarce, and prolonged forest rain. To ensure progress, units organize 3 shifts, 4 teams, increase manpower, machinery and closely monitor the construction site 24/7.
On September 5, 2026, the opening drum of the new school year sounded at the newly completed school.
On this occasion, the school is honored to welcome Ms. Ha Thi Nga, Member of the Party Central Committee, Vice President - Secretary General of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front to attend the Inauguration and Opening Ceremony of the school year.

Brilliant national costumes, excited faces of students create a special atmosphere on the first day of the school year.
For Sam Thi Khanh Thuong, an 8th grade student, being able to study in a new school is a great joy. She said she will try to study really hard to become a useful person.

270 days and nights of construction have closed, but a new journey begins. From a modern school on the border, today's students have more conditions to study, grow up and nurture long-term dreams.

For teacher Phung Van On, Principal of Petrovietnam - Phong Tho Ethnic Minority Boarding School, the opening day of the new school year is also the time when the school begins a new journey.
He said that the school has prepared the best conditions to be ready for the new school year. The collective of officials, teachers and students will unite and be determined to emulate in teaching well and learning well so as not to disappoint the expectations of the Party, State and the education sector for the school.
