According to the 2025-2026 school year schedule for preschool, general education and continuing education, holidays and Tet are implemented according to the provisions of the Labor Code and related guiding documents.
New Year's Day 2026 (January 1, 2026) will take place on Thursday next week and according to regulations, cadres, civil servants, public employees and workers will have 1 day off and receive full salary.
Because the day off falls in the middle of the week, there are no additional days off to compensate. Students will also have only 1 day off, which is on January 1, 2026.
However, the Ministry of Home Affairs has just issued Document No. 12511/BNV-CVL, dated December 24, 2025, asking for opinions from agencies on the plan for the 2026 New Year holiday.
The document clearly stated that, implementing the direction of Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra on the proposal for the Lunar New Year holiday in 2026 in Official Dispatch No. 12642/VPCP-KGVX, dated December 23, 2025 of the Government Office, the Ministry of Home Affairs requested agencies to give opinions on the Lunar New Year holiday in 2026 for cadres, civil servants, public employees and workers of state administrative agencies, public service units and workers in the enterprise sector who are not civil servants or public employees.
Accordingly, for civil servants and public employees, the Ministry of Home Affairs proposes that civil servants and public employees take a day off on January 1, 2026 according to regulations;
The Ministry of Home Affairs proposes to change from Friday (January 2, 2026) to Saturday (January 10, 2026) every weekday.
If this proposal is approved, on the occasion of New Year's Day 2026, civil servants and public employees will have 4 consecutive days off from Thursday, January 1, 2026 to Sunday, January 4, 2026. Students can also extend the 4-day New Year holiday
Of which, there are 2 consecutive days off due to swapping with working days and 2 days off every week.
According to the 2025-2026 school year schedule announced by the Ministry of Education and Training nationwide, semester I must end before January 18, 2026; the entire program and school year must be completed before May 31, 2026.
The recognition of the completion of the primary school program and the recognition of the junior high school graduation program will be carried out before June 30, 2026. Admissions for first-level classes must be completed before July 31, 2026. The 2026 high school graduation exam is scheduled to take place on June 11 and 12.

Other national exams will be organized according to the regulations and instructions of the Ministry of Education and Training.
Regarding the principle of developing a school year time plan, the Ministry stipulates that localities must ensure 35 weeks of actual study (18 weeks for semester I and 17 weeks for semester II). At the same time, the plan must be consistent with the conditions and practical characteristics of each locality.
