Students subject to direct admission are divided into five groups, according to the 10th grade admission instructions of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training.
In the first case, students of the Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities who have graduated from junior high school are admitted directly to grade 10 of the Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities.
Second, students of ethnic minority groups are stipulated in Decree No. 57/2017/ND-CP dated May 9, 2017 of the Government regulating preferential policies for enrollment and learning support for preschool children, students, and pupils. They are students from one of 16 ethnic groups including: Cong, Mang, Pu Do, Si La, Co Lao, Bo Y, La Ha, Ngai, Chut, O Du, brau, Ro Mem, Lo Lo, Lu, Pa Then, La Hu.
Third, students with disabilities. These are students with disabilities in one or more parts of the body or impaired function that manifest as abnormal, making it difficult to work, live and study.
Fourth, students who win national prizes organized by the Ministry of Education and Training or in coordination with ministries and ministerial-level agencies are organized nationwide for competitions, exams, festivals on culture, arts, sports, and science and technology research competitions.
Fifth, junior high school students won prizes in international competitions decided by the Minister of Education and Training.
The condition for direct admission is that students or parents or guardians have a permanent residence in Hanoi. Students are only admitted directly to a public high school in the admission area where students or parents have permanent residence.
In case students are eligible for direct admission but do not wish to be admitted directly, they must participate in the entrance exam for grade 10 of non-professional public high school for the 2025 - 2026 school year.
The 2025-2026 public high school 10th grade admission period in Hanoi will take place on June 7 and 8, 2025. To apply to public schools, students take three exams including math, literature and foreign language.
