New students change their learning methods to adapt to the university environment

Linh Đan |

Entering university, many new students actively change their learning methods, from self-study, group study, taking notes to searching for and supplementing suitable materials.

Be more proactive in self-study

From high school to university, Do Trung Kien (Dong Anh commune, Hanoi) - a new student majoring in Information Technology at a university in Hanoi - realized that learning requires more proactiveness. This is also something that male students are gradually getting used to in their first year.

Kien said that in first year at the faculty, he mainly studied general subjects, so in the early days he focused on getting used to the new learning method, building self-study habits, taking notes of important contents and finding more materials when he did not understand the lesson.

For subjects with exercises, male students try to do them themselves first, then compare them with the solution or discuss with friends. According to Kien, finding a way to solve the exercises first helps him understand the content more thoroughly, instead of just memorizing the available answers.

This learning method also helps me form proactiveness in studying. This is a necessary habit to prepare for the process of studying specialized subjects later" - Kien shared.

Also entering his first year of university, Vuong Hoai Nam - a new student at the Vietnam National University of Agriculture - believes that forming a self-study habit is one of the priorities when starting a new learning environment.

According to Nam, students cannot only rely on the knowledge conveyed in class. The amount of knowledge is more, while the time to study directly is limited, so male students determine that they need to spend more time self-exploring and supplementing knowledge.

Right from the first year, Nam planned to build a self-study habit. After each class, the male student will review the content he has been taught, find more related materials and take notes of ununderstood parts to continue learning.

Self-study also helps me be more proactive in arranging time. Instead of waiting until near the exam to review, I think I should break down the content and study regularly to avoid being overloaded" - Nam shared.

Learn in parallel with practice

Meanwhile, Ngo Thuy Mai (Dong Anh commune) - a new student majoring in English Language in Hanoi - chose a learning method associated with regular practice.

According to Mai, for subjects related to language, memorizing vocabulary or sentence structures on paper is not enough. Learners need to bring knowledge into specific usage situations to form reflexes.

Therefore, in addition to studying in class, Mai focuses on maintaining listening, speaking and language contact every day. Female students combine viewing content in the language they are learning, practicing listening, recording new words and reviewing at appropriate times.

Besides studying, Mai also started tutoring English for 1st and 2nd grade students. "This job not only helps me gain more experience but also creates opportunities to apply the English knowledge I have learned to practice, and at the same time train my ability to express and communicate" - Mai shared.

Mai believes that the important thing is not to spend too much time studying in one go, but to maintain regular habits. Regularly contacting and applying knowledge helps learners avoid rushing to study, and at the same time have more opportunities to consolidate what they have learned.
