Do not rent a room to reduce costs
For many students, choosing to rent a room near the school is not always a priority option when entering university. Do Trung Nam (Dong Anh commune, Hanoi) - a first-year student at a university in Hanoi - also chose to stay at home even though the distance to school is nearly 21km.
Instead of renting a room near the lecture hall, Nam plans to maintain going to school from home in the early days. For him, this is a way to both save costs and arrange personal work appropriately.
According to Nam, when he first entered university, renting a room meant incurring more expenses. Meanwhile, if he stayed at home, he could save on room rent and monthly living expenses.
I think if the house is about 20km from school, I can still go. In the beginning, I wanted to try going from home, if later the school schedule or work is not suitable, then I will consider renting a room" - Nam shared.
Not only choosing to go to school from home, Nam is also looking for a part-time job suitable for his schedule. The advantage is that the part-time job he just found is on the road from home to school.
I just found a part-time job in the middle of the road from home to school, so it's quite convenient. On days with work schedules, I can combine it with going to school, without having to travel too far" - Nam said.
For male students, this is also a way to take advantage of travel time instead of having to travel many times between school, part-time workplace and accommodation.
Nam believes that going to school far away certainly requires more proactiveness in arranging time. However, when part-time work is on the usual route, he still wants to stay at home during the early days of university.
Reduce financial pressure by staying with family
Also choosing to go back and forth every day is Nguyen Thi Hanh, a student studying in Hanoi. Hanh shared that from her house in Dong Anh commune (Hanoi) to the school is about 22km.
For Hanh, the most important reason not to rent a room is to save costs. Instead of having to pay for the room and living expenses when living separately, the female student can continue to live with her family.
I think if I rent a room, I will have quite a few more expenses each month, from room rent, electricity, water, living expenses... While my house is not too inconvenient to travel, so I want to save whatever I can" - Hanh shared.
According to Hanh, many of her friends also live in suburban areas and choose to go to school from home. Having people in the same situation helps them easily share experiences about travel time and how to arrange school schedules.
Around me, there are quite a few friends who are studying far away like that. Everyone thinks that if they can still travel, it will be more economical at home. Therefore, I also have no intention of renting a room from the beginning" - Hanh said.
Although the distance to school is more than 20km, Hanh believes that if she proactively arranges her time, daily commuting can still be done. Therefore, for now, the female student continues to stay with her family and go to school from home.
