Learning without knowing the days off
Nguyen Tan Lam - a 9th grade student in District 1, has set his first wish to join Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School - the school with the highest admission rate this year, at 1/4.61 (ie 1 in 5 students registering for the exam). Next, Lam also registered to take the Chemistry exam of Le Hong Phong and Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted.
And to achieve the above goal, Lam has had a busy study schedule in the past, in addition to studying at school, Lam also attended 4 extra classes of Math, Literature, English and Chemistry with 8 sessions/week.
"If I don't pass the entrance exam to a specialized school, I hope I can pass the entrance exam to Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School. The rate of struggles is high, so I am a bit worried, but I believe I will do well" - Lam said.
Nguyen Khac Chi Manh, a 9th grade student in Binh Thanh District, also has a "no days off" school schedule. In addition to studying at school, Manh also attended 4 extra classes in Math, Physics, English and Chemistry. The male student admitted that he was tired and pressured. "I come home almost every day after 8pm. On days with 2 extra classes, they will return later, around 10pm. Then continue to self-study until 0:00 or 1-2 am if there is still exercise. Many days I only sleep 4-5 hours" - Manh said.
Previously, Manh had expressed his wish to enter Gia Dinh High School in the regular and specialized Chemistry classes of all 3 specialized schools in Ho Chi Minh City, Le Hong Phong, Tran Dai Nghia and Pho Da Nang, in which the Pho Da Nang School took its own entrance exam.
Need to balance between study time and rest
Mr. Dang Hoang Du - a Math teacher in Ho Chi Minh City - said that increasing study and review time is necessary, especially for students who aim to enter specialized schools, top schools. However, they also need to allocate study time reasonably, avoid staying up late and need time to rest and relax during the day.
"Children, don't let yourself be overloaded, it will not affect your health. Parents need to pay more attention to their children during these days, pay attention to supplementing nutrition through meals for them, so that they have the best health and psychology when entering the exam" - Mr. Dang Hoang Du said.
Mr. Cao Duc Khoa - Principal of Huynh Khuong Ninh Secondary School (District 1) - advised parents not to put pressure on their children, forcing them to study too much. It is necessary to balance between studying and resting, entertainment and not chase after extra classes too much. "Experiment over the years shows that students only need to master basic knowledge and know how to apply knowledge to solve practical questions" - Mr. Khoa emphasized.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training said that the public 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year has 76,435 candidates registered to take the exam, while the total target is 70,070 students, reaching an enrollment rate of 79% (compared to 65% in 2024). Thus, there are only more than 6,000 candidates who have not been admitted to public schools, a sharp decrease compared to 20,000 in previous years.
The exam will take place on June 6 and 7 with 3 subjects: Math, Literature (120 minutes/subject) and Foreign Language (90 minutes). Candidates taking the entrance exam to a specialized school or an integrated class will take an additional exam in a specialized subject or an integrated subject (150 minutes). The Department plans to organize 158 exam locations, mobilize 4,424 exam rooms, 13,272 teachers to review the exam and 2,070 service staff.
