What are the admission criteria for grade 6 in Nghe An?

QUANG ĐẠI |

Nghe An - Before the regulation of eliminating entrance exams for grade 6, many parents were worried about the criteria for admission to junior high school.

Ms. Nguyen Hoang Phuong, resident of Ha Huy Tap ward (Vinh city) has a son who is in 5th grade this year. "He has good academic performance so he wants to register for admission to Dang Thai Mai Secondary School, a key school in the city. However, this year the Ministry of Education and Training has just announced that admission to 6th grade will only be conducted by selection method, I am worried about difficulties because the number of candidates with excellent and good academic records is definitely very high, it will be very difficult to consider admission" - Ms. Hoang Phuong said.

Parents' concerns are well-founded when in the 2024-2025 school year, 1,267 candidates registered for admission to grade 6 at Dang Thai Mai Secondary School, while the school's enrollment quota was only 309 students, the competition ratio was more than 4/1.

In the 2024-2025 school year, Dang Thai Mai Secondary School will develop an enrollment plan based on the results of primary school study and training, combined with testing, capacity assessment and a number of other criteria.

If students only have 4 years of being awarded for excellent completion of learning and training content, they need to have one of the following certificates or diplomas: Winning prizes in national competitions held in the 2023-2024 school year such as: Top Scholar, Top Scholar in Vietnamese, Top Scholar in Children, "Children's Ideas" Playground; Reading Culture Ambassador Competition...

In addition, students have certificates at the provincial Youth Informatics Competition, provincial Reading Culture Ambassador, won first, second and third prizes at the provincial Phu Dong Sports Festival, and won prizes in the city-level "Children's Math" Olympic competition.

The school also gives priority to students who have participated in several rounds of the English Challenge, students with one of the international English certificates such as Flyers, Ket, Pet, FCE, TOEFL or equivalent.

However, according to the school representative, from the 2025-2026 school year, enrollment will be conducted according to the new regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training (Circular No. 30/TT-BGDDT dated December 30, 2024 of the Ministry of Education and Training promulgating the Regulations on enrollment in junior high school and high school), so the school is waiting for instructions from education management levels.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Thai Van Thanh - Director of Nghe An Department of Education and Training said that for key, high-quality secondary schools, the number of applications will be higher than the enrollment quota. In the near future, the Department will have a document guiding specific admission plans and criteria.

"The Department's viewpoint is to have a secondary school enrollment plan that creates the most favorable conditions for schools and parents, helping schools recruit the most talented students and ensuring fair enrollment, consistent with actual conditions," said Mr. Thai Van Thanh.

As for the 10th grade admission plan for the 2025-2026 school year, there will be exams in 3 subjects: Literature - Math - Foreign Language.

"Choosing Foreign Language as the third exam subject aims to promote the foreign language learning movement in schools and improve the quality of this subject" - Director of Nghe An Department of Education and Training said.
