HCMC will recruit more than 71,000 students for public grade 10

Chân Phúc |

This year, Ho Chi Minh City expects about 78-80% of junior high school graduates to be admitted to public grade 10, equivalent to more than 71,000 students.

It is expected that in the next few days, the Department of Education and Training (DET) of Ho Chi Minh City will announce the enrollment quota for each public high school.

This is expected by both parents and students, because the enrollment quota will affect students' ability to be admitted to public high schools, especially in densely populated districts.

Nguyen Minh Hoang, a 9th grade student in Binh Tan district, said that his academic performance is only average, predicted to reach 15-17 points in the upcoming entrance exam for 10, enough to be admitted to An Lac High School (a school near his home) according to the standard score of last year.

"This score has many options but is not too suitable. In addition to the above school, other schools with equivalent or lower admission scores are far from home. I hope the admission quota will be kept stable so that the admission score will not fluctuate too much, and my chances of being admitted will be higher," Minh Hoang said.

Ms. Le Xuan, parent of student Minh Hoang, expressed concern about the time when her child is preparing to enter the 10th grade entrance exam in early June.

"My wife and I are workers with average income. Children studying in public schools will reduce the economic burden. In case the child does not pass the entrance exam, we can only send him to a continuing education center or a vocational school, which is a private school, and our family's conditions do not allow it," Ms. Xuan shared.

On the afternoon of April 1, speaking with Lao Dong, an official of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training said that it is expected that this year, about 78-80% of junior high school graduates will continue to study at public high schools. Last year, the rate of public 10th grade admission was 65%.

"This year, the target will be calculated to suit each area. Schools in suburban areas and suburban areas with a small number of students will assign less targets. In areas with high population density, the quota is assigned higher to ensure a place for students to study," he said.

Thus, this year, Ho Chi Minh City will have more than 71,000 students out of nearly 90,000 junior high school graduates continuing to study at public high schools. The remaining students will study at continuing education centers, vocational schools, private schools, study abroad...

The exam will take place on June 6-7. Candidates will take 3 exams: Math, Literature (120 minutes/subject), Foreign Language (foreign language 1 is being studied at school, the test time is 90 minutes). Candidates who register for admission to a specialized school or an integrated class will take an additional exam in a corresponding specialized or integrated subject (150 minutes).

This year, depending on the actual application submission situation at high schools and the needs of high schools, the Department of Education and Training will decide to enroll additional students for schools that lack many targets.

Last school year, Ho Chi Minh City had about 116,000 students graduating from junior high school, of which more than 96,000 students registered to take the 10th grade entrance exam. The total enrollment target of public high schools is more than 77,000 students.
