For many years, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has stipulated that students who choose to enter before the 10th grade entrance exam will not be adjusted after having finalized their wishes.
Therefore, setting appropriate wishes is an important factor in helping students increase their chances of being admitted to public schools.
Pham Thu Quynh - a 9th grade student at Tay Mo Secondary School (Nam Tu Liem, Hanoi) - said: "I rely on the benchmark scores of previous years and current abilities to choose a school with high admission potential. However, I am also very hesitant when my test score is not too high".
In the most recent survey, female students achieved a total of 22 points (7.33 points/subject). This score is still lower than the 2024 standard score of Xuan Phuong High School - the school Thu Quynh plans to set her first wish.
Before that, the female student's mother had instructed her to register her first wish to attend My Dinh High School or Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School. But according to Thu Quynh, these two schools are not suitable for her current abilities.
"If Xuan Phuong High School reduces its desire for 2, my chances of passing will be very low. One part is because I have difficulty passing the first wish, which is the two schools above. On the other hand, because my survey score is almost equal to Xuan Phuong High School's score, the passing rate is quite high because I hope the second grade will increase my score" - Thu Quynh shared.
Like Thu Quynh, Nguyen Bao Anh Quan - a 9th grade student at Hong Ha Secondary School (Dan Phuong, Hanoi) - is wondering when choosing a wish.
I think choosing my wishes for myself is not only about being able to be admitted but also about the opportunity to develop at the school where I study - the male student confided.
Anh Quan's mother once instructed him to choose Dan Phuong High School because this is the school with the highest entrance score in the district in many years. However, after considering many factors, the male student had other thoughts.
"If I am admitted to a school near my home, Hong Thai High School, I can conveniently travel to school. The quality of the school's training is also good and with the recent survey scores, I am also likely to be classified in the top grades. I am considering which school to choose" - Anh Quan confided.
Note the change in the coefficient of the subjects
Ms. Doan Thi Thanh Huyen - Vice Principal of Lien Ha Secondary School (Dan Phuong, Hanoi) advised parents and students to be careful in choosing and arranging the order of wishes for grade 10.
According to Ms. Huyen, the choice of wishes should be considered according to the ability of students through surveys. Parents and students should compare this result with the scores of schools in the past 3 years to know the fluctuations in the benchmark scores.
In addition, Ms. Thanh Huyen hopes that parents will become companions and orienters so that they can have the right choice. Parents should not force their children to go to schools beyond their ability because this year's students will start taking exams according to the new program and in Hanoi, the scores in Math and Literature will no longer double the coefficient. Therefore, it is expected that there will be a large gap between the wishes.
"The 1-point gap in the previous 2 wishes has caused little concern because the two subjects are multiplied by coefficients. This year, students need to adjust to arrange appropriately, avoid placing wishes with too many equivalent scores, leading to failure in all cases" - Ms. Thanh Huyen advised.
In addition to the admission factor, Ms. Huyen also advises students to consider additional factors such as distance, wishes and learning environment to choose the school they will study in for 3 years of high school.
