In recent days, public opinion has paid special attention to the incident of two students fighting, leading to the death of a 12th grade student. The incident not only caused regret but also aroused many thoughts and debates about the current methods of education, management and prevention of school violence.
From the perspective of an educational psychologist, in an interview with Lao Dong reporter, Dr. Nguyen Tung Lam - Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Educational Psychology, Chairman of the Board of Education of Dinh Tien Hoang High School (Hanoi) - said that the issue of school violence is still quite complicated.
Talking about the "olation" in resolving school violence, Dr. Nguyen Tung Lam said that the work of educating students about ethics and personality has not been carried out regularly and substantially.
"For example, in Japan, moral education is maintained continuously from primary school onwards, closely linked to each student. Meanwhile, one of the weaknesses of our current education system is not paying attention to educating each student. The coordination between schools and families is not really sustainable and effective" - he said.
According to Dr. Lam, student management in schools also has many limitations. "Many homeroom teachers do not have a good grasp of the situation of students, do not clearly understand the personality of each student to have appropriate educational methods. Some schools lack a supervisory system and lack coordination between departments in management work. In reality, teachers often only know the class they teach without a comprehensive grasp of the situation of students in school, leading to a lack of discipline and order" - he shared.
He believes that three weaknesses including ethics, management and legality are the main causes of school violence still existing and not being effectively prevented.
According to Dr. Nguyen Tung Lam, to prevent school violence, families and schools need to be more proactive in educating and caring for students.
"First of all, parents must clearly understand their children's personality and psychology. If your child has a strong personality, is easily hot-tempered or shows signs of disregard for others, parents should discuss early with the homeroom teacher to find ways to educate and discipline them. However, many parents tend to cover up their children, while teachers have not taken specific support measures for these students, making coordination difficult" - he analyzed.
According to him, only when the whole family and teacher are clearly aware of the problem and proactively coordinate early, will education be effective. "If we wait until the incident to discuss it, everything will be too late and very difficult to resolve" - Dr. Lam emphasized.

Sharing about specific measures to educate students from the emotional and psychological aspects, Dr. Nguyen Tung Lam said that it is necessary to focus on three key solutions, closely linked together.
"First of all, the program of moral and lifestyle education must be implemented practically, to each student, instead of stopping at theory" - he emphasized.
In addition, Dr. Nguyen Tung Lam shared that each school needs to build a school psychology consultation room with a team of well-trained experts to support and advise students. "Currently, many private schools have done well, while public schools still lack resources, specialized personnel and funding" - he said.
Dr. Nguyen Tung Lam added that society - especially law enforcement agencies - also needs to regularly coordinate and support schools in preventing and handling school violence, thereby creating a safe and healthy educational environment for students.
