hit his head twice with a hammer
On the morning of October 20, a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper went directly to the boarding house of Nguyen Van Nam (born in 1994, stepfather who abused his wife's stepchild, causing 10-year-old L to be hospitalized) to record information surrounding this shocking incident.
The small four-story rental house is located next to the wall of the neighbor's 2-storey house, but according to Ms. Tran Thi Nhung (born in 1985, residing in Phu Hoa village, Co Dam commune, owner of a 2-storey house) on the night of October 18 (the night her grandchild was beaten), she lay in the house without knowing because she could not hear the noise, was angry and could not cry.
This morning, at more than 6:00 a.m. on October 19, H.T.N.L (10 years old) opened a window next to the wall of Ms. Nhung's house and said that when her father used a hammer to beat her at night, he was seriously injured and bleeding on his head.

"When I got closer, I saw that my child was seriously injured on the head, so I ran to call the neighbors to report the incident. I also connected to call my grandchild to talk to his mother who was returning to her maternal hometown in Son La province to report the news. After that, the village chief and the police arrived. At this time, my father and I also came to open the rental house," Ms. Nhung recounted.
The house of Mr. Cluster Leader in Phu Hoa village, also next to the boarding house where L was beaten by his stepfather, also said that the family did not know about the beating. That morning, when her father left, she called neighbors to tell them about the incident.

According to the neighbor, it is possible that during the beating, Nguyen Van Nam threatened and threatened not to let the child cry for help or cry.
A year ago, he beat his nephew, causing whole-body bruising
On the morning of October 20, Mr. Phan Viet Hiep - Head of Phu Hoa village - said that at nearly 7:00 a.m. on October 19, he received a phone call from a police officer of Co Dam commune saying that he went to Nguyen Van Nam's motel to get information about H.T.N.L (10 years old, 5th grade student at Co Dam Primary School) being beaten and injured by Nam.
"When I ran to the motel, I saw that the door was locked outside. Through the window, I saw that the child was seriously injured on the head, so I called the commune police about the incident and suggested taking him to a medical facility. A moment later, that stepfather also returned and opened the rental house. After that, I took him directly to the commune health station. Next, the principal of Co Dam Primary School directly took him to Vinh Hospital (Nghe An), Mr. Hiep recounted.
According to Mr. Hiep, the family of Nguyen Van Nam lived in Van Thanh Bac village. Since 2024, this family has been building a new house, so they have gone to Phu Hoa village to rent a house.
Nam's wife, Ms. Ban Thi Binh (born in 1996, from To Mua commune, Son La province), was previously married and had a child, H.T.N.L. He then married Nam in 2022. Currently, the couple has 2 children together, the older one is 3 years old, the younger one is 1 year younger. Nam is a freelancer, often working as a bricklayer, and his family's circumstances are difficult.

According to Mr. Hiep, around October 2024, H.T.N.L was discovered by her teacher to have bruises and bleeding all over her body. The teacher asked and the child said that he was beaten by his stepfather, Nguyen Van Nam.
The school reported the incident to the locality. After that, Mr. Hiep, in his responsibility as the Village Chief, also coordinated to verify the incident. Through verification, it was determined that Nam beat L also at the rented house.
At that time, thinking about the family's difficult circumstances, the locality also handled the situation and required a commitment not to repeat the offense. But now the subject has repeatedly committed the offense, using a hammer to beat the child more brutally and dangerously," Mr. Hiep shared.
According to the Head of this village, in 2024, after L was beaten, he took him to his house to take care of him for a day to reassure him. At this time, some of the villagers and neighbors also came to visit and gave the child a small piece of silver to buy milk. Mr. Hiep's wife also bought him a new outfit.
"At that time, I felt sorry for the abuse, so my family asked to adopt him as a adopted child to take care of him, but their family did not agree," Mr. Hiep shared more.
Regarding the incident that Lao Dong Newspaper reported, the Investigation Police Agency of Ha Tinh Province Police arrested Nguyen Van Nam for the act of "Intentionally causing injury".
Ha Tinh Provincial Police also informed that, through verification, at around 6:00 p.m. on October 18, Nam took L to her biological mother, Ms. Tran Thi Huong (residing in Van Thanh Bac village) to eat rice. During the meal, Nam and his relatives drank beer. At around 10:00 p.m. the same day, Nam took baby L back to her rented house in Phu Hoa village.
Here, while talking, outraged because L did not answer the right answer and evoked the previous conflict, Nam used his hand and wooden stick to hit the nephew many times.

Nam also used a hammer to hit L in the head twice, causing L to be injured and bleeding. After committing the crime, Nam tied up a first aid and went to sleep.
After beating L, knowing that the police had intervened, on the morning of October 19, Nam fled to his mother's house. At around 10:00 p.m. the same day, Co Dam Commune Police discovered, arrested and took Nam to the headquarters for questioning. Here, the subject admitted to all the acts of abuse of L.
