At around 10:30 a.m. on January 9, the traffic light at the intersection of Ho Chi Minh Road East Branch and Provincial Road 571 (Ben Quan Town, Vinh Linh District, Quang Tri Province) was faulty. At the same time, the traffic light at the above location was on both green and red. At this location, there was a camera for issuing fines, confusing drivers, who feared they would be fined if they continued to drive.
Faulty traffic lights are common in Quang Tri province, especially in Dong Ha city.
At 5:33 p.m. on January 7, on the largest road in Dong Ha City, at the intersection of Hung Vuong and Huynh Thuc Khang, a traffic light pole was faulty. The traffic light pole on Hung Vuong Street in the right lane (going North - South) was working normally, but in the opposite lane, the traffic light pole was off. This led to a situation where one lane had a traffic light and the other did not, causing confusion for vehicles.
Similarly, at 7:07 a.m. on January 8, on the main road Tran Hung Dao (Dong Ha City) intersecting with Hien Luong Street, the traffic light on one lane was completely off, while the other lane was operating normally.
In particular, at the intersection of Le Loi, Ngo Quyen and Ton That Thuyet streets (Dong Ha city), there are often traffic light poles that are either active or off, causing traffic safety problems.
How to fix?
According to the Traffic Safety Committee of Quang Tri province, recently, some intersections have experienced short circuits and damaged traffic lights; and there have been frequent incidents of complete loss of signal in the lighting system.
Mr. Tran Huu Hung - Director of the Provincial Department of Transport, Deputy Head of the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee said that the reason was that the traffic light system had been invested for a long time and the equipment was too old. In addition, the prolonged rainy weather (no sunny days) had caused the underground equipment to operate unstably, and some solar-powered lights could not store electricity, so they operated unstably.
The above situation has caused difficulties for traffic participants passing through the intersection, with a high risk of traffic accidents, especially during rush hours. There have been many tragic traffic accidents at these intersections, causing public anger and opinions.
“The Provincial Traffic Safety Committee has requested the Quang Tri Provincial Police, Road Management Area II, People's Committees and Traffic Safety Committees of districts, towns and cities, according to their assigned functions and tasks, to fix and repair the unstable traffic light system. In case of a traffic accident caused by a traffic light malfunction and due to delay in repairing and overcoming the damage, the relevant unit will be fully responsible before the law,” said Mr. Tran Huu Hung.
The leader of the Traffic Police Department of Quang Tri Province Police informed that the operation of traffic lights will be handed over to the unit. To overcome the unstable traffic lights, the unit will first clarify the cause. Regarding the fines, people will not be fined when the traffic lights are broken. This is determined by comparing the images on the camera.
