Hanoi gateway road to be expanded 6 times, capital of nearly 1,500 billion VND

HỮU CHÁNH |

The main gateway road to Hanoi is about to be widened from 7-8m to 52m to help reduce traffic congestion and contribute to the socio-economic development of the capital.

The Hanoi People's Committee recently approved the project to expand National Highway 3 according to the plan (from the intersection of National Highway 18 to the intersection of the road to Soc Temple) in Soc Son district.

The project is about 6.7km long, with a land use scale of about 35.7 hectares, belonging to group B project.

The total investment for the road expansion is about 1,482 billion VND, from the Hanoi City budget. The project implementation progress is from 2024-2027.

The expanded route has a normal roadbed cross-section of 52m. National Highway 3 will become an urban road with a design speed of 80km/h.

Living for decades next to National Highway 3, Ms. Nguyen Thi Diem (Phu Linh commune, Soc Son district) said that the stream of cars running noisily, honking their horns... is a common sight here.

"The road is narrow, there are many vehicles, especially large cars, so just a little carelessness can easily cause an accident," said Ms. Diem.

Therefore, when hearing the news that National Highway 3 (the section from the intersection of National Highway 18 to the intersection of the road to Soc Temple) was about to be expanded, Ms. Diem was very excited, hoping that the project would soon be completed to clear the congestion and accidents in the area.

"The locality has organized meetings for people to grasp information about the project. We all support the policy of opening the road, but the compensation and site clearance policy must be reasonable so that people are not disadvantaged when giving up land for the project," said Ms. Diem.

Mr. Le Xuan Sang (34 years old, Tien Duoc commune, Soc Son) said that in addition to serious accidents, minor collisions between vehicles happen "like daily meals" on National Highway 3.

"There are also many people who drive motorbikes recklessly or drive in the wrong direction, crossing the road without looking, so accidents are more likely to happen," said Mr. Sang.

Therefore, Mr. Sang also hopes that the project will be implemented on schedule so that people's travel will be convenient and the lives of households along the route will also have many changes.

According to Lao Dong, the current status of National Highway 3 through Soc Son district for many years has only been a grade 3 road.

The road cross-section is only 7-8m wide, there are no sidewalks, no trees, the lighting is not uniform, it is relatively narrow, and traffic jams are frequent during rush hour.

As the main traffic axis in the North of Hanoi, National Highway 3 always receives many trucks and containers passing through every day. Just two large trucks going in opposite directions can almost completely occupy the road surface, forcing motorbikes to weave through the gaps.

According to the assessment of the People's Committee of Soc Son district, investment in expanding the route is necessary and urgent, contributing to completing the planned traffic network, helping to conveniently connect the central area of the capital to the northern provinces.

At the same time, create space for development of the central area of Soc Son district, gradually complete infrastructure, develop socio-economy, ensure national defense and security of Soc Son district in particular and Hanoi city in general.
