Hanoi expands main artery to 50m, 5 times wider than old road

Hanoi - The main artery with a cross-section of 8-10m is about to be expanded to 50m to help reduce congestion and increase inter-regional connectivity.

Constant traffic jam

Highway 70, from Ha Dong district to Van Dien (Thanh Tri district), runs along densely populated residential areas and is a vital route connecting National Highway 6 and National Highway 1A.

Lao Dong's records show that traffic congestion on Highway 70, Ha Dong - Van Dien section, is becoming increasingly serious, especially since many urban areas, high-rise buildings, hospitals, and schools have sprung up in the area.

On Highway 70, the Ha Dong - Van Dien section has some serious traffic jams during rush hours such as in front of Tan Trieu K Hospital, the intersection between Highway 70 and Pham Tu. Recently, there has been an additional section across To Bridge (intersection of Kim Giang - Phan Trong Tue).

Mr. Le Van Manh (35 years old, Thanh Tri) said that in addition to traffic jams, trucks forcing motorbikes to the side of the road has become a "daily occurrence" here. Many drivers also honk their horns loudly, startling and scaring motorbike riders.

"People living along the road witnessing these "evil spirits" every day are increasingly afraid, worried that accidents can happen at any time," said Mr. Manh.

It is forecasted that in the coming time, traffic volume on the route will continue to increase, while the project to renovate and upgrade the road has been around for a long time but the people here have been waiting for it for a long time without seeing it done.

When will the expansion construction start?

According to Lao Dong reporter's investigation, the project to renovate and upgrade Highway 70, Ha Dong - Van Dien section, is in the list of key projects of the city in the period of 2011-2015. The City People's Council approved this list at the end of 2011.

In 2013, the city assigned the Department of Transport to study the expansion of the road surface and intersections on Provincial Road 70, Ha Dong - Van Dien section, under the BT (build-transfer) model. However, by 2021, this route was among 82 BT projects that had been suspended.

In March 2024, the Hanoi People's Council passed a resolution to adjust the 2024 public investment plan and the 2021-2025 medium-term public investment plan at the city level, including the project to renovate and upgrade Provincial Road 70, Ha Dong - Van Dien section.

The project is 7.08km long, starting at Van Quan urban area and ending at Tu Hiep intersection in Thanh Tri district. This route is expected to connect with Phap Van - Cau Gie road with Ring Road 3.

The total investment is expected to be more than 5,484 billion VND, from the city budget, with implementation period from 2024-2026.

In addition to the synchronous construction of construction items, the project has invested in 3 more bridges on the route, including: Building a new bridge over To Lich River and National Highway 1A, building a new bridge over Hoa Binh River, and expanding To Bridge over To Lich River.

Upon completion, the route will have a cross-section of 50m, helping to reduce traffic pressure on the southern gateway routes of the city, synchronizing traffic infrastructure, contributing to the socio-economic development of the capital.
