This year, the Vietnam Sports Administration and the Vietnam Golf Association have developed a plan to send athletes to compete in ASIAD 20.
The announcement was made by VGA on March 19, thereby publicly announcing the criteria for selecting golfers to award slots to participate in ASIAD 20.
The Vietnamese golf team will register 6 players to compete in the Games (3 men, 3 women).
The coaching staff of the Vietnamese golf team will select athletes for ASIAD 20 in 2 phases.
In the first phase, the Vietnamese golf qualifying team will select 6 male athletes and 6 female athletes, based on their positions on the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), according to the principle of considering from high to low rankings; Time to finalize the WAGR ranking: according to the updated ranking on March 31, 2026; The selection criteria according to WAGR are applied uniformly to both athletes belonging to the Vietnam Golf Association and self-sufficient socialized slots (self-sufficient athletes are required to have their names on the WAGR ranking)", the content was proposed by the Vietnam Golf Association.
The second phase of the Selection is the time to find the official athlete to participate in ASIAD 20.
The announcement specifically states: "3 male athletes and 3 female athletes will be officially finalized by the coaching staff of the Vietnamese Golf Team on June 30, 2026 based on performance, World Amateur Golf Rankings WAGR at that time".
This year, the Vietnamese golf team is planning to participate in ASIAD 20 from socialized funds.
Among them, 4 golfers (3 males, 1 female) will contribute socialized funds from VGA and 2 golfers participate with self-sufficient socialized funds (implemented by athlete's family).
After having the official list to participate in ASIAD 20, the coaching staff of the Vietnamese golf team and management levels will have specific decisions on the funding for going to Japan to compete.
