BSR actively reduces greenhouse gas emissions

Linh Đan |

Facing the energy transition trend, as a key downstream unit of Petrovietnam, BSR is actively implementing emission reduction solutions.

Adapt quickly to new trends

As the key downstream unit of Petrovietnam, BSR has quickly taken measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, aiming towards the goal of producing green energy in the near future.

Resolution No. 5150 issued by BSR's Board of Directors sets out specific goals towards green and sustainable development criteria, in line with the energy transition trend.

BSR is determined to play an important role in ensuring energy security for the country and actively participate in implementing Vietnam's commitment to net zero emissions by 2050 at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26).

To achieve this, BSR aims to ensure safe, stable, continuous and efficient operations at optimal capacity. At the same time, it will promote the optimization of capacity, performance of high-value products, loss of crude oil and products during transportation and pumping, energy consumption and costs.

On the other hand, BSR will diversify crude oil sources to ensure supply and improve production and business efficiency; research options for processing intermediate raw materials and producing valuable products depending on the actual conditions of each stage.

To contribute to Vietnam's goal of reducing emissions of more than 563 million tons of CO2 by 2030 and the goal of net zero emissions by 2050, BSR has oriented a roadmap for emission reduction in each phase.

In the period 2023-2025, BSR will inventory greenhouse gases and develop and appraise a greenhouse gas mitigation plan until 2030 for Dung Quat Refinery. At the same time, it will implement greenhouse gas emission mitigation measures in accordance with BSR's production and business conditions, propose afforestation plans and register for a program under the carbon credit exchange and offset mechanism.

In the period 2023 - 2030, BSR will deploy solutions to improve technology, plant forests, and develop renewable energy in phase I to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. BSR will conduct carbon credit transactions from 2028, determine emission quotas and BSR's implementation plan until 2050.

In the final phase of the 2030 - 2050 roadmap, BSR will deploy solutions to improve technology, plant forests, and develop phase II energy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and implement carbon credit delivery.

Implement multiple solutions simultaneously

To implement this roadmap, BSR synchronously deploys many solutions, including optimizing operations (reducing 2-5%); upgrading and improving equipment and technology (reducing 15-20%); recovering CO2 (reducing from 30%) and planting forests, using renewable energy (reducing 50%)...

Along with the proposed solutions, BSR also implements many other solutions to ensure the completion of the goals. In particular, regarding training and science and technology solutions, BSR will strengthen and promote scientific and technological innovation initiatives to improve production and business efficiency, striving to register and implement at least 1,500 topics and initiatives to rationalize production in the period of 2021 - 2025.

At the same time, deploy the construction of the Petrochemical Development Center to enhance product research and development (R&D). BSR also promotes in-depth training for personnel and exchanges experiences with domestic and foreign petrochemical refinery factories; deploys the project to build a team of experts, title standards, development orientation and ensure capacity for each position for the unit.

BSR will regularly update Vietnamese law regulations to have appropriate solutions, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental protection requirements.

During the production and business process, BSR will complete and effectively operate the Safety - Health - Environment management system throughout the company. At the same time, it will inspect and control in accordance with regulations, continuously improve working conditions and environment and ensure the health of employees, focusing on the SAO card program (Safety Action Observation).

In addition, BSR has strengthened national defense and security education, regularly disseminated Party resolutions and policies and State laws on national defense and security; coordinated with central and local authorities, ministries and branches to effectively protect and ensure security for the key national security project, Dung Quat Oil Refinery, especially during the plant's upgrading and expansion phase.
