According to the Statistics Office (Ministry of Finance), the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in May 2025 increased by 0.16% compared to the previous month, mainly due to increased rental prices, home maintenance materials, electricity and food outside the home. CPI in May increased by 1.53% compared to December 2024; increased by 3.24% compared to the same period last year.
In the 0.16% increase of CPI in May 2025 compared to the previous month, there were 10 groups of goods and services with increased price indexes; the price index of the transport group alone decreased.
The group of housing, electricity, water, fuels and construction materials increased by 0.73% (implicate increasing the general CPI by 0.14 percentage points), mainly increasing prices in some of the following items: Housing maintenance material prices increased by 1.20%; rental prices increased by 0.64%; household electricity prices increased by 0.84%; domestic water prices increased by 1.0%. In contrast, kerosene prices fell 3.09% due to the impact of price adjustments in the month.
Other groups of goods and services increased by 0.43%, mainly focusing on some items: Jewelry groups increased by 10.64% according to domestic and world gold prices; body care goods increased by 0.52%; handbags, suitcases, wallets increased by 0.48%; repair of wristwatches and jewelry increased by 0.40%; wedding services increased by 0.17%.
The culture, entertainment and tourism groups increased by 0.28%. Of which, package tourism increased by 1.09% (domestic tourism increased by 1.24%; overseas tourism increased by 0.67%) due to strong tourism demand during the holiday season and preparing for the peak summer; hotels increased by 1.36%; accommodation increased by 0.50%; sports accommodation rental tickets increased by 0.51%; sports equipment increased by 0.15%. On the other hand, the price of trees and ornamental flowers decreased by 1.61%; musical instruments decreased by 0.02%.
The postal and telecommunications group increased by 0.21%. Of which, the price of conventional mobile phones increased by 0.68%; smartphone and tablet accessories increased by 0.51%; Smartphones and tablets increased by 0.28%; Phone repair increased by 0.31% due to the increased demand for technology equipment purchases under stimulus programs; increased labor costs and replacement component prices.
The group of household appliances and appliances increased by 0.19%. Of which, washing machine repair increased by 0.64%; air conditioner repair increased by 0.40%; refrigerator repair increased by 0.37% due to the weather entering the early hot season, while component and maintenance service costs also increased. Hot water poster prices increased by 0.48%; soap, shower gel and shampoo all increased by 0.45%; plastic items increased by 0.39%; electric fans increased by 0.36%.
The beverage and tobacco group increased by 0.14% due to increased production costs and consumer demand, of which carbonated soft drinks increased by 0.49%; drinking water increased the force in bottles, cans, and boxes by 0.17%. Smoking and beer prices increased by 0.18% and 0. 10% compared to the previous month, respectively.
The garment, hat and shoe groups increased by 0.05%. Of which, the price index for shoe services increased by 0. 40%; hats, hats, raincoats increased by 0.52%; garment services increased by 0.33%; fabrics of all kinds increased by 0.12%; other garments such as gloves and socks increased by 0.04%.
The food and beverage service group increased by 0.03%, of which: Cuisine decreased by 0.18%; food decreased by 0.04%; dining outside the family increased by 0.28%.
The group of drugs and medical services increased by 0.02%, mainly in the group of medical equipment such as fever-reducing pairs, blood pressure measuring devices, cotton/medical bananas... increased by 0.25% due to increased production costs and health care needs of the people. Prices of painkillers, anti-flammatory drugs, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and gout and bone disease treatment drugs increased by 0.18%; anti-alernment drugs and over-the-counter drugs increased by 0.15%; the group of drugs acting on the respiratory tract increased by 0.11%.
The education sector increased by 0.01%, of which the price of stationery increased by 0.12%, specifically: writing materials of all kinds increased by 0.24%; stationery and other school supplies increased by 0.17%; paper products increased by 0.11%.
On the other hand, the transport sector decreased by 0.42%, mainly due to the diesel price index decreasing by 2.33%; the gasoline price index decreasing by 1.20% due to the impact of domestic gasoline price adjustments according to world gasoline prices.
Basic inflation in May 2025 increased by 0.33% compared to the previous month and increased by 3.33% compared to the same period last year. On average, in the first month of 2025, core inflation increased by 3. 10% over the same period last year, lower than the 3.21% increase in the average CPI, mainly due to food, foodstuffs, electricity, and medical service prices, which are factors that increase CPI but are excluded in the group of goods excluded in the portfolio for core inflation.
