On January 17, Dong Thap province held a ceremony to announce the opening of the pair of international road and river border gates Thuong Phuoc (Dong Thap, Vietnam) - Kaoh Roka (Prey Veng, Cambodia) in accordance with the spirit of Resolution No. 235/NQ-CP dated December 12, 2024 of the Government.
This is the final legal procedure of the international border gate opening process, creating the basis for deploying functional forces at the border gate to perform the task of controlling entry and exit, import and export and resolving related cases on both sides of the border according to regulations.
The official opening of the pair of international border gates not only creates favorable conditions for people of the two countries to travel back and forth, especially during the New Year of the Snake 2025, but also opens up prospects for border economic development.
According to Mr. Tran Tri Quang - Vice Chairman of Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee, this is the most special border gate among the 7 border gates in the total length of more than 50km of Dong Thap province bordering Prey Veng province (Cambodia). Because this is the only border gate with 2 types of border: river and road.
In the past, Thuong Phuoc International Border Gate only carried out exit and entry procedures for people, vehicles and goods from third countries passing through the river border gate. Therefore, when the Government issued Resolution No. 235/NQ-CP on opening international border gates by road and river, it gave Thuong Phuoc new vitality, becoming a comprehensive, interconnected, multi-functional border gate, creating multi-modal transport and trade connections by water and land.
"This will be the driving force for socio-economic development in the border area, not only for Dong Thap province but also for the entire Mekong Delta region," Mr. Tran Tri Quang emphasized.
The opening area of the Thuong Phuoc International Road and River Border Gate is located in Thuong Phuoc 1 commune (Hong Ngu district, Dong Thap province), on the border section from sub-marker 238/3 to marker 240 + 1116 m, which has completed demarcation and marker planting, and is about 25 km from the center of Hong Ngu district, about 80 km from Cao Lanh city and about 160 km from Can Tho city.
At the same time, the Cambodian government has paid attention to developing the Kaoh Roka Border Gate in terms of type and decided to upgrade it to an international border gate, fully deploying functional forces and investing in basic infrastructure and equipment to serve the inspection and control of people, vehicles, and goods entering and exiting the country by both road and river.
It is estimated that when the Thuong Phuoc International Border Gate pair of roads and waterways is operational, trade exchange activities between Dong Thap province and Prey Veng province are expected to increase by an average of 10% per year.
In addition, this border gate has the shortest road route to the capital Phnom Penh. From there, it connects to major cities in Cambodia and to Thailand, creating favorable conditions for Dong Thap province and the Mekong Delta to welcome and transport international tourists traveling by road through ASEAN countries...
