Information from Vietnam Railways Corporation (VNR), in the first 6 months of 2026, the railway industry transported nearly 3.9 million passengers.
Passenger transport volume reached about 3.9 million trips, an increase of 5.2% compared to the same period in 2025. Meanwhile, freight transport volume reached about 2.3 million tons, equal to 85.9% compared to the same period. Although freight volume decreased, the total transport revenue of the industry still reached 2,921.2 billion VND, an increase of 8.4%.
Railway Transport Joint Stock Company (Traravico) - VNR's key transport unit - recorded transport revenue of 2,727.3 billion VND, up 8.7% over the same period. In which, passenger transport revenue reached more than 2,003 billion VND, up 10.8%, thanks to a sharp increase in passenger volume during Tet, the April 30 - May 1 holiday and the summer peak.
According to Traravico, the Binh Ngo Tet holiday is the peak season with the best business results in recent years, with nearly 779,000 passengers, an increase of 9.5%; revenue reached nearly 556 billion VND, an increase of 12.4% compared to the same period last year.
Some routes recorded double-digit revenue growth such as Hanoi - Lao Cai increasing by 27%, Hanoi - Da Nang (SE19/20) increasing by 12%, Hanoi - Hai Phong increasing by more than 12%.
Notably, the "Heritage Journey" train on the Hue - Da Nang route, put into operation from March 2026, contributed to attracting passengers, helping output increase by 11% and revenue increase by 41%. In addition, 13 charter ships transported more than 5,400 passengers, bringing in more than 16 billion VND in revenue.
In the field of freight transport, Traravico transported more than 1.65 million tons in the first 6 months of the year. Although output decreased, freight transport revenue still reached 724.2 billion VND, an increase of 3.2% compared to the same period.
According to VNR, production and business results in the first 6 months of the year have not yet reached the set plan. In the last 6 months of the year, the enterprise sets a transport revenue target of 2,711.8 billion VND, an increase of 12.8%, and at the same time continues to develop tourist ship products, charter ships, specialized ships and restructure cargo transport activities to improve operational efficiency and expand cargo sources.
