At the beginning of the coffee harvest season, coffee farmers in the mountainous district of Huong Hoa (Quang Tri province) are happy because coffee prices have increased.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan (residing in Cop village, Huong Phung commune, Huong Hoa district) said that her family planted about 12,000 catimo coffee trees on an area of 2.5 hectares in Huong Phung commune. This year, the weather was favorable and her family took good care of the coffee, so the coffee produced large, beautiful fruits.
Currently, coffee has entered the harvest season, the price of fresh coffee berries is currently purchased by agents at a price ranging from 13,000 VND/kg to 16,000 VND/kg.
Compared to the 2023 crop year and previous years, the early coffee price of the 2024 crop year is the highest ever.
"I'm very happy that the price is high at the beginning of the season. I just hope that the price will be stable like this so that farmers can make a profit," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan.
Previously, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha's family (living in Hiep Hoa village, Tan Lien commune, Huong Hoa district) had a coffee garden, but due to unstable prices, they switched to other crops. After that, she replanted 1,000 new trees, and this year the coffee started to bear fruit.
“1,000 trees are expected to yield about 3 tons, the current price of about 14,000 VND/kg is very good. My family plans to plant a few thousand more trees,” said Ms. Ha.
In Quang Tri province, coffee trees are grown in the mountainous district of Huong Hoa, at its peak, the total coffee growing area in the locality was about 5,000 hectares. Currently, there are about 3,700 hectares, of which about 3,400 hectares of coffee are being harvested.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Huong Hoa district, the price of fresh coffee beans at 16,000 VND/kg is the highest ever.
“With the rising price of coffee, people have started to replant coffee trees and focus on caring for and harvesting coffee to ensure quality. Every year, more than 150 hectares of coffee are replanted and replanted in the area,” said Mr. Hoang Dinh Binh, Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Division of Huong Hoa district.
