Abundant supply
According to traders, the supply of live pigs in Can Tho is abundant, enough to meet market demand, not affected by epidemics such as African swine fever or the pig spell that has been complicated in other regions recently.

Mr. Le Hoang Van, a trader specializing in purchasing live pigs in Phuoc Thoi ward (Can Tho city), said that currently, there are many live pigs, good quality, and there are no signs of disease. The associated livestock farming households all comply with safety procedures, so we are very assured when purchasing and supplying to the market, said Mr. Van.
Also cautious in choosing the supply, Mr. Si, a trader purchasing live pigs in Ninh Kieu ward (Can Tho city), shared: "The pigs return regularly every day, both quantity and quality are guaranteed. Livestock farmers are also more proactive in disease prevention, so the supply is very stable".
Ms. Nguyen Thi Huynh, Deputy General Director of Can Tho General Trading Joint Stock Company, said that thanks to close linkages with many large farms and farms in the area, the source of live pigs supplied to the company is always abundant, without interruption or impact by the epidemic.
Accordingly, finished pork is still guaranteed to be provided to restaurants, eateries, schools and supermarket systems in Can Tho, Ca Mau, An Giang 26,00 VND/day on average.
Prices drop, consumer demand stagnates
According to Ms. Huynh, in the past month, the price of live pigs has been moving sideways and tended to decrease slightly, fluctuating around 69,000 - 72,000 VND/kg, the highest at 73,000 VND/kg. Although prices are lower than before, the quantity of supply to the market has decreased somewhat. The reason is that the demand for pork consumption at partner schools has decreased significantly due to students having a summer break. This is a common situation that occurs at this time every year.
The company is still making efforts to implement price stabilization programs, as well as paying special attention to food safety and hygiene management to ensure quality products reach consumers.
Seeds, feed used in livestock farming, care processes, etc. at the farms and farms we have associated with must ensure food safety and hygiene standards. The company also has its own veterinary force to monitor the import process and check quality, said Ms. Huynh.

Meanwhile, Mr. Van clearly sees the decline in demand at traditional markets: "Although the price of pigs has decreased to a lower level since May this year, to only 65,000 - 67,000 VND/kg, purchasing power at markets is still very slow. People tend to tighten spending or switch to other foods at lower prices.
Mr. Si also said that the pig trading situation seems quiet. The demand for consumption in restaurants and eateries is no longer vibrant, forcing him to reduce the source of imported live pigs to reduce the pressure of holding goods.
Recorded at traditional markets in Can Tho city such as Tan An, Xuan Khanh, O Mon... fresh pork products such as pork belly, pork thighs, and lean and lean meat have slightly decreased by 5,000 - 10,000 VND/kg. In particular, pork belly and young ribs continue to have stable prices, ranging from 130,000 - 180,000 VND/kg.
