Mr. Ngo Minh Tam (a livestock farmer in Can Tho City) shared that in the past month, the price of live pigs has remained stable. During the recent sale, his family's live pigs were purchased by traders for 70,000 VND/kg. With this price, Mr. Tam earns about 2.5 million VND/fruit (about 100kg).
The price of pigs is quite high, but the cost of food and medicine has increased by about 10%, so the profit is only at an average level. This new period, we plan to reduce the number of re-herded pigs because prices are tending to go sideways and decrease slightly, and adding to the rainy season is the time when many diseases are likely to arise" - Mr. Tam said.
If in March 2025, on average, Mr. Le Van Tam (a livestock farmer in Can Tho City) earned nearly 3 million VND/pig (about 100kg), then the current profit is only 2.2 million VND.
"At the beginning of the year, the price of live pigs increased dramatically, I sold them for 78,000 VND/kg. Currently, traders can only buy live pigs for 70,000 VND/kg. With this price, if the owner produces the breeding animals, it will still make a good profit. As for me, because the cost of breeding animals, industrial feed, medicine, barn hygiene... all increased, so the profit decreased somewhat" - Mr. Tam shared.
With erratic stormy weather and complicated epidemics, Mr. Tam is considering reducing the number of re-herding freshwater pigs as well as taking advantage of the empty barn to renovate and clean.
According to traders purchasing live pigs in Can Tho City, the current supply is quite abundant, and consumption is maintained at a stable level. However, to ensure a source of pork for the market, traders are proactively depositing to prevent price fluctuations.
As of April 2025, the total pig herd in Can Tho City is 128,171, exceeding the plan by 0.1%, down 0.3% over the same period. Accumulated in the first 4 months of 2025, the output of various types of fresh meat was 11,595 tons. Of which, beef was 7,532 tons, poultry was 4,064 tons, reaching 37.4% of the plan, down 2.68% over the same period. Livestock has had a clear change in production organization, farm livestock farming, focusing on closed chains, biosafety, disease safety; developing livestock according to the VietGAP process.
Accordingly, the city's agricultural sector has strengthened inspection and close supervision of the animal epidemic situation in the area, in order to detect outbreaks early to organize the handling of outbreaks quickly and promptly, avoiding widespread spread when an epidemic occurs.
