World oil prices today
World gasoline and oil prices recorded a strong reversal week. Ending a trading week, WTI crude oil was at 83.85 USD/barrel last weekend, increasing to 90.40 USD/barrel this weekend. Overall last week, WTI oil increased by 6.55 USD/barrel, equivalent to an increase of 7.81% compared to the previous week.
Brent oil was at 90.38 USD/barrel last weekend, up to 105.33 USD/barrel this weekend. Overall last week, Brent oil increased by 14.95 USD/barrel, equivalent to an increase of 16.54% compared to the previous week.
According to analysts, oil prices rose sharply again as tensions in the Middle East continued to escalate after a US destroyer opened fire on an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman. The Iranian military announced it would take retaliatory action, raising concerns about the risk of conflict spreading and directly affecting global energy supplies.
On the US side, Washington said that the ship ignored maritime control warnings and is currently being controlled by US forces to serve inspection work. Meanwhile, Iran has not yet made a final decision on whether to participate in peace talks with the US or not, making the prospect of cooling down tensions in the region continue to be dim.
The Strait of Hormuz - the world's lifeline for transporting oil and liquefied natural gas - has remained almost paralyzed since the conflict between the US, Israel and Iran broke out at the end of February. Ship traffic through this area has been disrupted, causing global energy supplies to continue to tighten, thereby creating more momentum for oil prices to rise.
