World oil prices today
World gasoline and oil prices are on a strong downward trend. At the end of yesterday's trading session (August 25), Brent oil and WTI oil prices decreased by 3.9% and 3.1% respectively.
By this morning's session, both oil commodities continued the downward trend. At 8:05 am (Vietnam time), WTI oil price was at 80.48 USD/barrel, down 1.88 USD/barrel, equivalent to a decrease of 2.88%. WTI oil price closed the previous trading session at 82.36 USD/barrel, and opened today's session at 81.24 USD/barrel.
Brent oil was at 85.24 USD/barrel, down 0.51 USD/barrel, equivalent to a decrease of 0.59%. Brent oil closed the previous trading session at 85.75 USD/barrel, and opened today's session at 85.74 USD/barrel.
World oil prices fell as investors were not too worried about new US sanctions against Iran. Washington's shift from military measures to increasing economic pressure on Tehran partly helps ease concerns in the oil market. In addition, the sanctions just announced by the US are assessed as not as strict as some traders predicted earlier.
US President Donald Trump declared an "unprecedented economic war and isolation" against Iran, and warned of economic consequences for any country or organization that supports Tehran or provides support to this country.
The Iranian side declared that it would respond to US sanctions, and expressed confidence that major trading partners would resist Washington's pressure campaign.
However, tensions between the two sides continue, while oil transportation through the Strait of Hormuz - a route that once accounted for about 1/5 of the global oil supply - continues to be limited.
Sea transport data shows that only two oil tankers passed through the Strait of Hormuz on August 24, the lowest level of the number of cargo ships passing through this route in a day since the beginning of May.
