Lao Cai - The province strives to bring the output of aquaculture in reservoirs to exceed 7,500 tons/year by 2030, creating jobs for more than 2,000 workers.

On August 12, Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee informed that the province has just issued Plan No. 382 on developing reservoir aquaculture in the period 2026 - 2030.

According to the plan, by 2030, the output of cage and raft aquaculture will reach over 6,500 tons/year, and direct farming will reach over 1,000 tons/year. The production value of reservoir aquaculture is expected to reach about 280 billion VND/year.

The province sets a target of more than 50% of establishments and farming households participating in production and consumption linkages according to the value chain; creating jobs for more than 2,000 workers. Average income from reservoir aquaculture increased by more than 30% compared to 2025.

Lao Cai will develop cage and raft fish farming and free-range farming suitable to the ecological conditions of each reservoir, prioritizing native and specialty aquatic species.

Some models applying new technologies, combining aquaculture with ecotourism and experience are also encouraged.

At the same time, gradually complete the infrastructure of the farming area, develop preliminary processing, preservation, and processing facilities; promote traceability, build brands and develop OCOP products.

Over 20% of cage and raft fish farming facilities are striving to apply VietGAP or equivalent standards.

The development of aquaculture must be linked to environmental protection and dam safety. Lao Cai province will assess environmental load-bearing capacity to determine scale, farming density, strengthen monitoring and water quality control.

In the period 2026 - 2030, Lao Cai prioritizes assessing the potential of large reservoirs, building new technology cage and raft fish farming models and investing in infrastructure to serve aquaculture, exploitation, and stockpiling of water resources at Thac Ba reservoir.
