2 rescuers killed in cargo ship attack in Red Sea

The attack on the cargo ship hit rescue forces evacuating the crew, marking the first death since the regional conflict broke out.

The Yemeni government on August 11 accused Houthi forces of firing missiles at cargo ships in the Red Sea, killing 6 people, including rescue workers.

The internationally recognized Yemeni government coast guard said on August 11 that the Houthi armed group's attack on the Tihamah cargo ship caused fire and serious damage, killing 3 Pakistani citizens and one Indonesian.

This vehicle continued to be attacked while rescue forces were evacuating the crew, killing two rescuers. "The attack hit the location where the rescue operation took place, leading to casualties among members of the forces participating in the response operation," the Yemeni coast guard said, adding that 10 people were injured after the attacks.

The Yemeni Ministry of Transport previously accused the Houthi of firing 3 ballistic missiles at the Tihamah ship in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The agency declared that the armed group must "be fully responsible for the deaths, injuries and damages on the Tihamah cargo ship, as well as the serious consequences caused by the attacks".

This is the latest attack targeting cargo ships in and around the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, the southern gateway to the Red Sea, since the Houthi forces announced the imposition of maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia last month.

The incident also marks the first death in a Houthi attack on ships since the Middle East conflict broke out in late February.
