Series of power projects open up growth potential for Can Tho

PHƯƠNG ANH |

Can Tho City is accelerating large-scale thermal power and wind power projects, expanding growth space and ensuring energy security in the Mekong Delta region.

Many large-scale energy projects are being implemented

Currently, Can Tho focuses on many large-scale energy projects in the region. In which, operating plants such as Can Tho Thermal Power, O Mon I Thermal Power and Song Hau 1 Thermal Power. Projects being implemented include Long Phu I Thermal Power, Song Hau 2 Thermal Power, and O Mon IV Thermal Power.

Notably, O Mon IV Thermal Power Plant is the first downstream project of the Gas - Electricity Block B - O Mon Project Series. The plant has a designed capacity of 1,155 MW. This is also one of the large-scale projects in the Southwest region.

The Gas - Electricity Block B project chain has gas reserves of about 100 billion m3, each year supplying 5-6 billion m3 of gas to produce tens of billions of kWh of clean electricity. It is expected that by the end of 2028, when the gas source of Block B is brought ashore, the plant will be completed and generate commercial electricity. When put into operation, O Mon IV Thermal Power Plant will increase the total electricity capacity managed and operated by Petrovietnam to more than 9,300 MW (equivalent to about 10% of the total system capacity).

Wind power is also becoming a new direction in the energy development strategy of Can Tho City after the merger. To date, 7 projects have been commercially operated, with a total capacity of about 340 MW.

According to ST2 Energy Joint Stock Company, phase 2 of Wind Power Plant No. 7 has just started construction (December 2025) with a total investment of 3,728 billion VND, expected to be completed and commercially generated electricity in the fourth quarter of 2026. When put into operation, the project is expected to supply more than 271 million kWh of electricity per year, contributing to reducing the pressure of power shortages for the area.

Increase the proportion of renewable energy

Implementing Resolution No. 70-NQ/TW dated August 20, 2025 of the Politburo on ensuring national energy security to 2030, vision to 2045, the Can Tho City Party Committee has developed an Action Program.

Accordingly, Can Tho City continues to form and develop O Mon Power Center with O Mon I Thermal Power Plant and gas/LNG power projects that are calling for investment, playing a key role in ensuring energy security of the Mekong Delta region. With a 72 km long coastline, the city has many advantages to attract wind power investment. The city is also promoting 5 grid-connected solar power projects, with a total capacity of 210 MW; Hau Giang biomass power plant with a capacity of 20 MW has put into operation a 6 MW unit.

Can Tho City aims to develop diverse power sources by 2030, complete projects according to the Plan, focusing on O Mon Power Center, ensuring stable power supply, especially from gas power sources. Total primary energy supply is expected to reach about 12 - 14 million tons of oil equivalent; total power capacity of power sources is about 10 - 12 GW; electricity output reaches 50 - 70 billion kWh; the proportion of renewable energy accounts for about 20 - 25%.

Information at the meeting of press and radio agencies in the fourth quarter of 2025, Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen - Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee said that the city identifies energy as one of the key growth drivers.

According to him, the locality will drastically check the progress of each project; in case investors delay or do not deploy, they will resolutely recover it to hand it over to more capable enterprises. The goal is that by the end of the third quarter of 2026, key energy projects can generate commercial electricity, thereby making a great contribution to the double-digit economic growth target of Can Tho City in 2026 and the following years.

The Government Office has just issued Notice No. 12/TB-VPCP concluding the conclusion of Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son on the inspection of projects belonging to the O Mon Power Center - Block B.

Regarding the O Mon I Thermal Power Plant Fuel Conversion Project using Block B gas, the Deputy Prime Minister requested to urgently deploy it on schedule, complete the fuel conversion work, ensure the reception of the first gas flow in the third quarter of 2027, and put Block B gas into use in 2027. O Mon II, III, and IV projects must accelerate progress, in which O Mon IV must be put into operation before 2028.
