In 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) will coordinate with localities and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) to deploy 7 pilot models of high-quality and low-emission rice production in 5 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region, including Can Tho, Dong Thap, Kien Giang, Tra Vinh and Soc Trang. After 1 year of implementation, all models show a positive signal, bringing excitement to farmers.

Mr. Truong Van Hung - Director of Hung Loi Agricultural Cooperative (Long Phu district, Soc Trang province), said that in the Summer-Autumn rice crop and Winter-Spring 2024, farmers participated in the high-quality rice production model, reducing emissions and profiting from 45 - 49 million VND/ha.
"In the recent Winter-Spring crop, the yield was about 7 tons/ha, with the company spending 10,300 VND/kg, 3,000 VND/kg higher than the market. In addition, input costs have decreased by 10 - 15% thanks to reduced seeds, fertilizers and pesticides, increasing profits by more than 12% compared to the previous traditional farming method," said Mr. Hung.

The waste reduction rice model is also successfully harvested in the provinces of Kien Giang, Can Tho, Dong Thap and Tra Vinh with an increase in profit from 12 - 32.3% and productivity reaching over 6 tons/ha. In particular, this model also helps reduce production costs by 20 - 30% and reduces the average of 5 - 6 tons of CO2/ha thanks to the application of interspersed drying methods and straw collection after harvest. All harvested rice output is registered by businesses with higher purchase prices from 200 - 300 VND/kg.
Mr. Le Huu Toan - Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Kien Giang Province - said: "The pilot model of the autumn -winter crop 2024 has brought about 32% higher profits than traditional farming - a desirable number for Nong People ".

According to the Department of Crop Production - Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the pilot model of high-quality, emission reduction is expected to continue to be replicated in 5 localities that have been implemented since previous seasons, with a total of 53 models on an area of over 3,600 hectares, with an expected output of nearly 24,500 tons.
In addition, 4 provinces of Long An, Tien Giang, Hau Giang and An Giang have also proactively built 45 pilot models in the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop, on a total area of 745 hectares, with an expected output of more than 5,500 tons.
