Rice prices increase, Soc Trang farmers are excited to harvest

Soc Trang - After Tet, farmers go to the fields to harvest the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring rice crop, bringing with them joy and hope for a bumper crop and improved prices.

Du chi phi san xuat hoi cao do sau benh, nhung gia lua tang 500 dong/kg so voi truoc Tet doi voi giong Dai Thom 8, nen gia dinh toi van co loi“, ong Xuan noi.
Mr. Thanh Xuan - a farmer in Tai Van commune (Tran De district, Soc Trang province) shared: “My family has just finished harvesting 6 hectares of winter-spring rice, with a yield of more than 6 tons/ha. Traders bought at the field for 7,000 VND/kg. After deducting expenses, I made a profit of about 15 million VND/ha. Although production costs are a bit high due to pests and diseases, the price of Dai Thom 8 rice variety increased by 500 VND/kg compared to before Tet, so my family still made a profit,” said Mr. Xuan.
Chi Tra Thi Hanh - mot nong dan o xa Tai Van (huyen Tran De, tinh Soc Trang) cung dang tat bat thu hoach hon 5 ha lua giong ST25, voi nang suat uoc dat 8 tan/ha. “Gia lua hien tai la 9.100 dong/kg, tang hon 1.000 dong/kg so voi truoc Tet. Mac du gia lua chua cao bang vu he thu truoc do, nhung chung toi van co loi. Hy vong gia se tiep tuc tang trong cac vu toi”, chi Hanh noi.
Ms. Tra Thi Hanh - a farmer in Tai Van commune (Tran De district, Soc Trang province) is also busy harvesting more than 5 hectares of ST25 rice, with an estimated yield of 8 tons/ha. "The current rice price is 9,100 VND/kg, an increase of more than 1,000 VND/kg compared to before Tet. Although the rice price is not as high as the previous summer-autumn crop, we still make a profit. Hopefully the price will continue to increase in the coming crops," Ms. Hanh said.

Not only rice farmers but also laborers have extra income during the harvest season. Mr. Lam Hen, a rice porter, said: “After a few days off for Tet, I started working on the 4th of January, earning about 500,000 VND/day from carrying rice.”

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Soc Trang province, in 2024, rice output will reach more than 2.1 million tons, exporting 1.2 million tons of rice. The province aims to have 195,000 hectares of specialty rice sown area by 2025, with priority given to developing ST rice varieties.
