Quang Ngai - Prolonged storms have damaged many vegetable growing areas, and supply has decreased sharply, causing vegetable prices to increase by 50%, forcing people to tighten spending every meal.

For more than a month, Quang Ngai has continuously experienced prolonged storms, floods and heavy rains. Many vegetable growing areas in the province and neighboring localities were damaged, causing a decrease in the supply of green vegetables. At traditional markets, the prices of many types of vegetables have increased by about 50%, directly affecting people's spending and daily life.

Recorded at markets in the central area of Quang Ngai province, the amount of green vegetables coming to the market has decreased significantly. Many vegetable stalls are no longer as diverse as before. According to traders, at normal times they import about 40 kg of vegetables per day, but now there are only about 10 kg left. Scurary vegetables and rising prices have caused people's purchasing power to decline.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Giang Thu, a trader at the central market of Quang Ngai province, said that the price of green vegetables has increased dramatically, so people limit their purchases, leading to sluggish business of traders.

Many types of vegetables have increased in price by 30 to 50% compared to before. Herbs increased from 40,000 VND to 90,000 VND per kg; celery increased from 30,000 to 60,000 VND; Vietnamese coriander increased from 20,000 VND to 60,000 VND; sweet cabbage increased from 25,000 to 40,000 VND; water spinach increased from 20,000 to 50,000 VND per kg; cauliflower increased from 30,000 to 50,000 VND per kg.

The high price of vegetables has forced many people to tighten spending. Many families said they have to reduce their daily vegetable intake, prioritizing choosing low prices to balance their meals.

Ms. Tran Thi Sang, residing in Truong Quang Trong ward, Quang Ngai province, said that normally, going to the market to buy vegetables for about 30,000 VND is enough for a family of 4. But now due to prolonged storms and floods, there are few vegetables in the markets and high prices, so I have to buy up to 50,000 VND to have enough, so I also limit my vegetable purchase.

Recorded at supermarkets in the area, vegetable prices have also increased compared to before. However, thanks to implementing price stabilization programs, many items are still kept at a relatively stable level. At Co.opmart Quang Ngai supermarket, sweet cabbage is sold for 68,000 VND per kg, green mustard for 74,000 VND per kg, and mixed vegetables for 110,000 VND per kg.

A representative of Co.opmart Quang Ngai supermarket said that the unit has signed long-term contracts with vegetable suppliers in Da Lat and some provinces, so the basic source of goods is guaranteed. Most of the products have only increased slightly by about 5% compared to before.
