Goods from traditional markets tend to increase slightly.
According to Lao Dong Newspaper reporters at some traditional markets in Hanoi, many items are showing an upward trend in price before Tet. At traditional markets in Cau Giay and Bac Tu Liem areas, prices of essential items such as fresh vegetables and pork have increased slightly, while chicken and eggs remain the same.
At the local market in Bac Tu Liem district (Hanoi), vegetable prices increased slightly from 5,000 - 10,000 VND/kg. Of which, bok choy increased from 15,000 to 25,000 VND/kg, kohlrabi from 5,000 to 7,000 VND/root, tomatoes increased from 15,000 to 20,000 VND/kg. Potatoes cost 20,000 VND/kg, green beans 30,000 VND/kg... Pork also recorded prices from 135,000 - 150,000 VND/kg depending on the type.
Speaking to a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, a trader at Tran Quoc Vuong Market (Cau Giay, Hanoi) shared: “Because the weather has turned cold, vegetables and fruits grow slowly, causing a shortage of goods. When importing goods from wholesalers, the cost is higher than in previous months, so the selling price to consumers has also increased a bit.”
In Ho Chi Minh City, taking advantage of her free time, Ms. Tieu Bang (living in Binh Thanh District) stopped by a supermarket on An Phu Street (Thu Duc City) to shop for her family on the occasion of New Year 2025.
"I think this is a good time to buy foods such as spices, dried foods, Tet gifts... The goods are quite diverse, with many promotions such as buy 1 get 1 free, buy combo and get free plate or bowl... The supermarket is not too crowded so you can shop comfortably" - Ms. Tieu Bang shared.
According to Lao Dong, at this time, people in Ho Chi Minh City are shopping for Tet quite busily, especially in the evenings and on weekends.
No shortage of goods
Businesses are also ready for the peak shopping season, with typical Tet products at stable prices.
Mr. Truong Chi Thien - General Director of Vinh Thanh Dat Company - said that with the current situation, purchasing power is expected to be equal or slightly increase compared to the Giap Thin Tet holiday, not decrease. In particular, purchasing power will increase sharply around the 10th of the 12th lunar month. Enterprises also plan to prepare double the normal level during the period from the 10th to the 15th of the 12th lunar month.
Ba Huan Joint Stock Company also offers solutions on food and new products to make the Tet holiday more diverse for families.
Ms. Pham Thi Huan - Chairwoman of Ba Huan Board of Directors - shared: "Although the market is affected in terms of purchasing power, the company still increased supply by about 10% compared to last year to ensure that food and foodstuffs are always available, meeting the high demand of people during Tet holidays".
Regarding Tet gift baskets, according to Mr. Quang Vinh - Sales Department, Nong Lam Food Joint Stock Company - this year, the company has launched quite diverse Tet gift basket segments. Every year, the company tries to improve with different designs with prices ranging from 350,000 - 2,000,000 VND/gift basket, suitable for the budget of many customers.
Speaking with Lao Dong, Ms. Ly Kim Chi - President of the Ho Chi Minh City Food and Foodstuff Association - informed that currently, businesses have fully prepared goods to supply for Tet.
“If people’s shopping demand suddenly increases, businesses will also supply enough because they have goods in reserve. Businesses ensure production and supply, trying to keep prices stable for consumers,” said Ms. Ly Kim Chi.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade, key enterprises participating in the Market Stabilization Program have prepared capital of more than VND22,000 billion. Of which, more than VND8,000 billion is to prepare essential food and foodstuffs to serve the Lunar New Year market at At Ty 2025.
“To serve low-income workers who do not have the conditions to shop for Tet early; businesses and distribution systems have implemented many stimulus programs, promotions, and mobile market stabilization sales programs for many essential goods. It is forecasted that the market price situation for the Lunar New Year 2025 in the city will be relatively stable, without any shortages or local price fevers,” informed Mr. Nguyen Hong Y - Head of Trade Management Department, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade.
According to Mr. Nguyen Quang Huy - Deputy Director of the Market Management Department of Ho Chi Minh City, on the occasion of Lunar New Year, taking advantage of people's shopping needs, subjects are promoting the business of counterfeit, poor quality goods of unknown origin.
In the coming time, the unit will strengthen inspection and control of goods at commercial centers, wholesale markets, specialized markets, traditional markets, trading streets, production facilities, and poultry slaughterhouses. Focus on inspection and strict handling of organizations and individuals who take advantage of high consumer demand during Tet to unreasonably increase prices, causing market instability, especially for goods consumed a lot during the New Year and Lunar New Year in 2025.
