Tightening the counterfeit goods market on e-commerce platforms

HCMC - Despite tightening control, counterfeit goods are still rampant on e-commerce platforms. Many consumers buy by mistake because they believe in advertising and lose money and confidence.

Online counterfeit matrix

Regularly shopping on e-commerce platforms, Mr. Tuan Tu (living in Go Vap district) said that he recently ordered a bottle of branded perfume from an account. However, when he received the goods, he discovered that the products did not have fake anti- product stamps, crayed packaging and a very different scent from the real products he had used.

"I bought the goods because I believed in their reputation, and unexpectedly I received counterfeit goods. Not only did I lose money, I also felt cheated. If the platform does not handle it promptly and tighten management, consumers like me will lose confidence" - Mr. Tu shared.

Recorded on e-commerce platforms, just type a keyword for the item you want to find, the search results will appear a series of stores with different prices. However, it is this richness that makes it difficult for consumers to distinguish between real and poor quality goods.

Talking to Lao Dong, a representative of Shopee said that when posting for sale, the seller is responsible for ensuring that their goods comply with current legal regulations, product posting regulations, product ban and limitation policies, as well as the terms of use and policies of the platform.

Products listed for sale on the platform will be managed through many control mechanisms to ensure that sellers do not violate policies. The control system using keywords and images will be regularly updated by the company's censorship department through inspection, supervision or as soon as information about related incidents arises, receiving information.

"Shopee also strengthens regular reviews, checks and handles violations as soon as they are detected or receive complaints. In cases of intentional violations, the company's censorship personnel will resolutely remove the violating content and products.

For violating shops, the company will take measures to handle them depending on the severity of the violation from temporary lock to permanent lock. In case of serious violations, we will report to the competent state agency according to the provisions of law" - said a Shopee representative.

In the first 5 months of 2025, the unit has actively supported competent state agencies in verifying and clarifying suspected cases of law violations on e-commerce platforms.

Tightening surprise inspections, targeting warehouses directly

According to Mr. Nguyen Quang Huy - Deputy Head of the Ho Chi Minh City Market Management Department (under the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade), in addition to shopping malls and traditional markets, social networks are also a "Paradise" for trading in counterfeit goods and goods of unknown origin. The business of counterfeit and counterfeit goods on online platforms is complicated and difficult to control. The seller often does not have a fixed business address, uses fake accounts, making it difficult to verify, trace and handle.

"We really need strong cooperation from social networking platforms in providing information and removing violating content. Without the participation of relevant parties, counterfeit goods will continue to circulate on the network environment" - Mr. Huy said.

In addition, a part of consumers still accept to use counterfeit goods because the designs are beautiful and the prices are cheap. Many businesses that are owners of intellectual property rights have not been proactive and determined in coordinating with authorities to detect and handle counterfeit goods.

To continue to improve the effectiveness of the fight against counterfeit and counterfeit goods in the coming time, the City Market Management Department continues to promote regular, continuous, sudden, focused and key market supervision, inspection and control.

Special attention should be paid to reviewing production, business establishments, agents, distribution channels, and e-commerce platforms at high risk of counterfeit goods, smuggled goods, goods of unknown origin, and expired goods.
