Vietnam Customs coordinated with WCO to organize a thematic workshop to improve the effectiveness of inspection and verification of goods' origin, contributing to preventing fraud.

From 20-22.5.2025, the Customs Department will coordinate with the World Customs Organization (WCO) to organize a National Workshop on the rules of Origin in Hanoi, with the participation of WCO experts and Customs officials from units under the Customs Department.

The workshop is part of the WCO's technical assistance program to improve the capacity of Vietnam Customs in applying, inspecting and determining the origin rules of goods, especially in the context of many new-generation free trade agreements (FTAs) being implemented.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, the representative of Vietnam Customs emphasized the key role of the origin rule in ensuring proper implementation of international trade commitments, combating origin fraud and protecting the legitimate interests of businesses in compliance.

The WCO representative also discussed issues of concern to WCO members in the field of origin, WCO's efforts in developing guidelines and tools to support the implementation of the origin rule, anti-fraud solutions in this field as well as technical assistance activities for member countries, including Vietnam.

During the three working days, delegates will be updated with important contents such as: introducing WCO tools and documents; implementation practices in Vietnam; mechanism for certification and self- certifcation of origin; inspection, verification and risk management; practical situation guidance; and determination of origin in advance. Group discussion sessions and report presentations from participating officials will create opportunities to share experiences and propose improvements in implementation work in the locality.

With the participation of officials at professional units of the Customs Department and 20 Regional Customs Branches, the contents discussed at the workshop will be widely spread throughout the industry. At the same time, WCO's tools and recommendations to improve the effectiveness of inspection and determination of origin will continue to be studied for implementation in accordance with reality in Vietnam.

The organization of this workshop affirms the commitment of Vietnam Customs to proactively integrate, improve implementation capacity and contribute to ensuring serious implementation of international trade commitments.
