Ho Chi Minh City links Dong Nai City into a "super economic quadrilateral city
Today, May 18, Dong Nai announced the National Assembly's Resolution on the establishment of Dong Nai city, a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper interviewed Doctor of Science, architect (Dr. Sc. Architect) Ngo Viet Nam Son about the position, opportunities and development orientation of Dong Nai city in the coming time.

Sir, what is the current position of Dong Nai city?
- With its position as the driving force center of the southern gateway area, connecting Ho Chi Minh City, the Central Highlands and the Mekong Delta, Dong Nai City opens up bilateral cooperation opportunities with Ho Chi Minh City at a higher level, creating conditions for smoother and easier cooperation with Ho Chi Minh City.
Dong Nai City will exploit new development models that show new positions, socio-economic growth commensurate with the new role, contributing more to the economic development of urban areas and the whole country.
For Ho Chi Minh City, after merging Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau and when linked well with Dong Nai City, it will form a "super economic quadrilateral city". Ho Chi Minh City is currently lacking a very important "side" which is Long Thanh International Airport to become a complete link for a super city.

Dong Nai City and Ho Chi Minh City will form a multi-modal infrastructure axis (including roads, highways, railways, high-speed railways, aviation, river ports, seaports) to support both localities connecting to the sea. This is a very large position for Dong Nai City.
Dong Nai City will also receive special mechanisms at a higher level. At the same time, Dong Nai City will have a greater responsibility to contribute more to the Budget with Ho Chi Minh City.
What are the opportunities and challenges for Dong Nai City, sir?
- Long Thanh airport urban development plays a core role with an affected radius of up to 30-40km covering the entire Long Thanh, Nhon Trach and part of Ho Chi Minh City area. This airport urban area requires the cooperation and linkage of Dong Nai City and Ho Chi Minh City because customers mainly come from Ho Chi Minh City and serve the urban area.

In the future, the free trade area of Dong Nai City associated with Long Thanh airport must cooperate with the free trade area of Ho Chi Minh City associated with the Thi Vai - Cai Mep - Can Gio port cluster to take advantage of the cooperation linkage of key infrastructures. This is a "life-or-death" trend to develop a high-level free trade area that can compete in Southeast Asia and Asia.
I expect Dong Nai City to have specific mechanisms like Ho Chi Minh City in developing multimodal infrastructure necessary for the city, creating a marine economic axis connecting industrial parks in Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Bien Hoa, Phu My... to Cai Mep - Thi Vai - Can Gio port cluster and to the cargo port of Long Thanh airport, helping to reduce logistics costs in industrial development, becoming an important driving force for double-digit economic growth of Dong Nai City, making Dong Nai City a large-scale logistics center of the Southeast region.
The opportunity is very large, and at the same time, it also requires Dong Nai City to upgrade multi-modal infrastructure connected to each other, which is a great pressure on the budget. Therefore, Dong Nai City needs to expand regional cooperation with Ho Chi Minh City, public-private partnerships, domestic and foreign cooperation, and attract socialized capital.

The current population size of Dong Nai City is about 4.5 million people, which is also a pressure on the infrastructure system to be upgraded to be worthy of its stature so that there are no more traffic jams and environmental pollution...
Dong Nai City needs high-quality human resources. On the one hand, Dong Nai City must train on the spot, and on the other hand, the city must also create mechanisms to attract talents from other places to serve key projects.
The process of urbanization also goes hand in hand with environmental pressure, Dong Nai City also needs to have development management methods in parallel with environmental protection, heritage and identity protection, not allowing negative impacts on the living environment.
Dong Nai City should develop in a multi-center, multi-polar direction
According to you, in what direction should Dong Nai City develop?
- With the position of a new growth pole of the urban area, Dong Nai City should develop in a multi-center, multi-polar connection direction, taking the development of the urban pole of Long Thanh airport, free trade area as the nucleus for new growth.
With a multi-center, multi-polar urban system, Dong Nai City needs to focus on developing the metro system.

Currently, Dong Nai City is implementing a project to extend the Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien metro line to the City's Political and Administrative Center and Long Thanh airport. In addition, the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh line is also being implemented.
However, metro development needs to go hand in hand with TOD urban development running along to put Long Thanh airport into more effective operation. This is an opportunity to connect the multi-center, multi-polar system of Dong Nai together.
In addition, the orientation of Dong Nai City needs to pay attention to developing international logistics centers, elevating old industrial parks to become new urban centers, with large land funds to create new industrial centers connected to a modern logistics system; Gradually shift to industrial development in the direction of industry, high industry, and smart industry.
Finally, the development of Dong Nai City must always be associated with sustainable development thinking.
Thank you, sir!
