Vinh Long aims for a high-quality seedling and ornamental flower center

HOÀNG LỘC |

Vinh Long - Seedlings and ornamental flowers are being promoted to apply science and technology, improve product quality, expand consumption markets and aim for export.

Bringing technology into every stage of production

Vinh Long continues to affirm its position as one of the key seedling and ornamental plant production areas of the Mekong Delta with about 3,497ha and more than 8,155 households participating in production.

Specialized farming areas are concentrated in Cho Lach, Vinh Thanh, Hung Khanh Trung, Phu Phung and Long Duc communes, and at the same time promote the application of science and technology to enhance the value of traditional industries.

Many households have boldly invested in net house systems, automatic irrigation, applied modern grafting techniques instead of traditional methods, and expanded consumption through e-commerce platforms to improve production efficiency.

As one of the typical models, Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc (Vinh Thanh commune) invests in a synchronous production system, supplying about 50,000 pine trees of all kinds to domestic and foreign markets each year, including Cambodia and India.

Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc said: "Applying science and technology helps improve the success rate of propagation and uniform plant quality. Automatic irrigation systems and surveillance cameras also help reduce labor costs and manage gardens more effectively.

Not only households, businesses are also increasing investment in biotechnology to create high-quality seed sources. ViGen Biotechnology Co., Ltd. currently owns four research and production facilities with modern laboratory and growth room systems.

Thanks to mastering tissue culture technology, the enterprise achieves a capacity of more than 20 million disease-free seedlings each year, providing many coconut varieties, ornamental flowers and plants of stable quality to the market.

CEO Nguyen Van Sinh said: "Tissue transplantation technology helps maintain the superior characteristics of the mother plant, create uniform, disease-free seedlings, contributing to reducing costs and proactively securing domestic seed sources.

Towards a center of high-quality seedlings and ornamental flowers

In parallel with applying technology, localities are building strategies to develop concentrated production areas, gradually forming value chains and improving the competitiveness of the seedling and ornamental plant industry.

In Vinh Thanh commune, the average annual output reaches about 27.6 million seedlings and ornamental flowers. The locality sets a goal to develop modern agriculture associated with businesses, cooperatives, Cai Mon brand and ecotourism.

Secretary of Vinh Thanh Commune Party Committee Nguyen Van Liem said: "The locality will strongly develop production linkages according to the value chain, build urban agriculture and strive to become the leading high-quality seedling and ornamental plant production area of the province".

Mr. Tran Huu Nghi - Vice Chairman of Cho Lach Commune People's Committee said that the commune currently has more than 1,000 hectares of seedlings and ornamental flowers, supplying about 7 million seedlings and 5 million ornamental flower products each year, continuing to play the role of a key production area of the province.

According to Mr. Nghi, in the period 2026-2030, the locality will complete concentrated production areas, invest in digital infrastructure, logistics, build industry databases and expand consumption on e-commerce platforms.

At the same time, the locality strives to have about 30% of production households participate in online business, strengthening value chain links. The provincial agricultural sector has also recognized 190 headline trees, 1,021 headline gardens and 110 mother coconut gardens, ensuring long-term quality seed sources.

Director of Vinh Long Provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment Lam Van Tan said: "The province orients the construction of large-scale seedling and ornamental flower production areas associated with consumption linkages, gradually expanding export markets, increasing income for people and developing sustainable agriculture".
