Devoting myself to the profession
In the field of sports, in addition to reporters, journalists, and editors specializing in written content or television products, photo reporters are the most important people. Sports always need images. On the sports front, each photo is a moment that the reporter preserves and sends to readers, thereby depicting moments of joy in competition or the feeling of having to accept defeat when losing.
Through each time working on the sports Games front (from SEA Games to ASIAD or Olympics), to capture the moments of athletes' competition, sports photo reporters are the ones who closely follow the competition scores.
Sports reporter Bui Luong of the Vietnam Sports Administration recalled his time working at SEA Games 33 held last year in Thailand: "I was fortunate to be able to work to record the moments of competition and the moment of going on stage to receive medals of Vietnamese Sports Athletes in some recent SEA Games. Each competition has its own feelings. In Thailand, we had to travel through dozens of competition venues to get the most valuable photos.
During the working process, reporter Bui Luong said that he was lucky to personally record the moments when Vietnamese athletes won the first Gold Medal in the SEA Games 31, 32 and 33. For journalist Thu Sam (Culture Newspaper), each Sports Festival is a time for him to work in reality with Vietnamese Sports coaches and athletes to record the most sublime moments of competition.
The memory that journalist Thu Sam mentioned a lot in her professional work process was when participating in the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. At that time, she was among the few Vietnamese journalists directly present at the shooting range of the Olympics and witnessed the brilliant moment of winning the Gold Medal of shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh.
Right at that moment, journalist Thu Sam simultaneously did her best professional skills from taking photos like a photojournalist to record Hoang Xuan Vinh's coronation moment and then recording and writing articles to update information and transmit it to Vietnam in time for the newspaper to serve readers.
“That is a memory I cannot forget because in addition to my role as a Vietnamese Sports fan, I also take on the work of a journalist working in reality at the Congress. At that time, the entire Vietnamese Sports Delegation was moved by the historic Gold Medal and I directly recorded the time to promptly send articles to the printed issue as soon as possible to serve readers,” journalist Thu Sam shared.

Each photo is a valuable content
For many Vietnamese Sports fans, the memorable and frequently mentioned moment at SEA Games 33 was the moment young swimmer Vo Thi My Tien burst into tears immediately after receiving the achievement medal. If simply the moment was just an expression of emotion about the medal achievement, it would certainly not have been remembered. Vietnamese Sports photo reporters have sensitively recorded the moment Vo Thi My Tien was exchanged with an official after receiving the Silver Medal in the women's 400m individual medley event.
From a face with a bright smile, My Tien changed her emotions and burst into tears. Later, there were reminders to officials who had exchanged with the player, but clearly if that valuable moment was not recorded and posted by reporters, the audience would certainly not understand the inside story.
Also at the swimming pool at SEA Games 33, photojournalist Minh Dan (Lao Dong Newspaper) captured one of the most memorable moments, which was the victorious smile of young swimmer Nguyen Quang Thuan. After 3 SEA Games participations, Quang Thuan won the first Gold Medal in the 400m individual medley event in Thailand at that time.
When I asked Quang Thuan and showed the athlete the photo he had taken, Quang Thuan expressed that the SEA Games 33 was really valuable to him because he kept his promise to his older sister (former player Nguyen Thi Anh Vien) to bring gold back to his family," reporter Minh Dan once expressed.
Currently, in the votes honoring many categories of Vietnamese Sports, only the Victory Cup Award - a prestigious annual award considered the "Oscar of Vietnamese Sports", co-organized by the Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) and accompanying units - has a "Impressive Image of the Year" category in the field of journalism and media. In 2025, the "Impressive Image of the Year" award at the 2025 Victory Cup is the Moment when player Dinh Bac wears a pith helmet for coach Kim Sang Sik after the SEA Games 33 football final in Thailand.
