On July 15, in Dong Ha ward, Quang Tri province, WWF-Vietnam coordinated with the People's Committee of Quang Tri province to organize a conference to announce the Trung Truong Son Conservation Strategy for the period 2026-2030.
The new strategy aims to restore forest ecosystems, preserve biodiversity and enhance climate change resilience with nature-based solutions. At the same time, the strategy is associated with national and global climate and sustainable development goals.
Trung Truong Son is assessed by WWF as one of 200 important ecological areas globally, home to many rare endemic species such as Sao la, Truong Son barbed whale, and more than 10 million people from more than 20 ethnic groups. This continues to be a priority landscape in the organization's strategy.
Mr. Hoang Nam, Permanent Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Tri province affirmed that the conference took place in the context of merging Quang Tri and Quang Binh into the new Quang Tri province, posing a requirement for unified management of resources and sustainable development in a large area. He emphasized that the province will long-term accompany WWF to implement harmonious conservation and development goals.
Quang Tri is the first locality to sign a 5-year cooperation agreement with WWF since October 2023, thereby implementing 14 projects with a total budget of more than 163 billion VND. Outstanding initiatives include converting 2,500 hectares of single-crop coffee to agroforestry combined in Huong Hoa, preserving Sao La, reducing plastic waste in Dong Ha and Con Co, supporting sustainable non-timber forest product production, and piloting the review of effective conservation areas outside the nature reserve.
Mr. Thibault Ledecq, Director of WWF-Vietnam Conservation, said WWF is committed to long-term cooperation with local authorities and communities to turn Trung Truong Son into a model landscape, contributing to nature conservation and improving sustainable livelihoods.
