The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has forecasted weather trends in September 2024. Mr. Nguyen Van Huong - Head of Weather Forecast Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, General Department of Hydrometeorology - analyzed in more depth the notable weather developments.
Sir, although it has been autumn, the temperature in the North and Central regions is still quite high. What is the forecast for the temperature trend in September and will there be any more heat waves, sir?
- Regarding temperature trends, the average temperature across the country in August is forecast to be 0.5 - 1 degree Celsius higher than the average of many years in the same period.
In September, we forecast that heat waves will continue to occur in the Central region, but the intensity will not be as severe and long-lasting as during peak periods. The heat waves will be concentrated in the first half of September 2024.
It can be seen that in recent times, most areas across the country have had rain, locally heavy to very heavy rain; especially during the September 2nd holiday, the Central Highlands and the South had very heavy rain causing flooding. What is the forecast for the rain trend in September, sir?
- It is forecasted that in September, the total rainfall in Lai Chau, Dien Bien, provinces from Ha Tinh to Binh Thuan, the Central Highlands and the South will be 5-20% higher than the average of many years; other areas will be 20-30% higher than the average of many years in the same period.
During the forecast period, there will be many days of rain, showers and thunderstorms nationwide; including the possibility of some widespread moderate and heavy rains. September is still the rainy season in the Northern and Central Highlands regions, so there is a high risk of flash floods and landslides.
The rainy season in the Central region is likely to start approximately at the multi-year average, that is, from around mid-September 2024.
In August, there were no tropical cyclones in the East Sea. In September, when La Nina is approaching, could you please provide more information on the forecast of storms and tropical depressions?
- During September 2024, the forecast of storm/tropical depression activity in the East Sea and its impact on Vietnam's mainland is likely to be approximately the same as the average of many years in the same period. According to the average data of many years in September, there were 2-4 storms/tropical depressions in the East Sea; 1-2 made landfall.
In the coming time, dangerous weather phenomena such as storms or tropical depressions and southwest monsoons are likely to cause strong winds and large waves affecting activities in the East Sea area.
We also note that long-term warning bulletins are often trend forecasts. Therefore, to have a better basis for weather forecasts, people should wait for short-term bulletins issued daily by the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
Thank you very much!
