Warning of the risk of rain greater than 100mm/3 hours
Mr. Nguyen Huu Thanh - Deputy Head of Weather Forecast Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting - said that from noon on August 6 to the morning of August 7, in the mountainous and midland areas of the North, there will be moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms, locally very heavy rain with common rainfall of 30 - 60mm, locally over 150mm. The rain will be concentrated in the late afternoon and night.
According to Mr. Thanh, people need to pay attention to warnings from meteorological agencies about the risk of heavy rain with rainfall greater than 100mm within 3 hours.
From the afternoon of August 7, heavy rain in the mountainous and midland areas of the North will gradually decrease.
In addition, on the day and night of August 6, other places in the North will have showers and thunderstorms, locally heavy to very heavy rain with rainfall of 10 - 30mm, locally over 70mm.
The area from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh and the South has some places with heavy rain with rainfall over 50mm. The rain will be concentrated in the late afternoon and night.
During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind. The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warns that the risk of natural disasters due to heavy rain, tornadoes, lightning, and hail is level 1.
Heavy rain is likely to cause flooding in low-lying areas, urban and industrial areas; flash floods on small rivers and streams; landslides on steep slopes.
Real-time warning information for areas at risk of flash floods and landslides is provided online on the website of the Department of Hydrometeorology at: https://luquetsatlo.nchmf.gov.vn and in a separate bulletin warning of flash floods and landslides.
Record of continuous rainfall broken

According to Mr. Mai Van Khiem - Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, Department of Hydro-Meteorology, this year, looking at the overall weather patterns, including heavy rain affected by ENSO in a neutral state. In most ENSO neutral years, the total rainfall is not too much but is approximately the average of many years.
"However, the rainfall may be concentrated in some periods. Extreme rain in a short period of time in a narrow range is something we have especially warned of. Therefore, we do not only care about the total rainfall, because the abnormality is not only in the rainfall but also in the abnormality of rainfall and intensity" - Mr. Khiem analyzed.
According to Mr. Khiem, there were previous record rains of only a few dozen mm, but now the rains can reach 100 - 200 mm. These are previously unrecorded rainfall and are now appearing more and more.
" statistics from the meteorological agency show that over the past 20 years, the number of rains with rainfall of over 50mm within 1 hour in the North and some localities has tended to increase" - Mr. Khiem said.
