In mid-April, the weather in the North has gradually turned to a state of hot weather at noon and afternoon; some places have hot weather above 37 degrees Celsius. However, a cold front is about to arrive, causing the weather to change direction quickly.
The end of the season cold air is likely to be accompanied by many dangerous weather phenomena. The reporter had an interview with Mr. Vu Anh Tuan - Deputy Head of Weather Forecast Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting to clarify the developments and impacts of the approaching cold air mass.

Sir, can you tell us when the cold air will affect the North?
- The cold air mass is continuing to move south. We assess that this is a cold air mass with medium to strong intensity.
It is forecasted that from noon to the afternoon of April 12, the cold air mass will affect the Northeast region, then by night it will expand to the Northwest and North Central regions. Next, cold air will spread to the provinces from Quang Binh to Thua Thien Hue.
This cold air mass is forecast to last until April 14.
During the cold air mass during the changing seasons, people need to pay attention to which dangerous weather phenomena and which areas are at high risk, sir?
- This cold air mass combined with the compressed low pressure trough will cause widespread thunderstorms, posing many potential extreme weather risks.
According to the forecast, areas likely to be strongly affected include the Northwest region, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh,
In these localities, there is a possibility of moderate rain, locally heavy to very heavy rain. The common rainfall is 30 - 60mm, in some places over 90mm. Notably, during these rains, there may be heavy rain with rainfall reaching 80mm within 6 hours.
The Northeast region and along from Quang Tri to Quang Ngai are also affected by cold air causing thunderstorms. During thunderstorms, special attention should be paid to tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.
In addition, the Southern Central Highlands and the South in the two days of April 14 - 15, due to the influence of winter wind disturbances, are also likely to experience unseasonal rain, accompanied by the risk of thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning and hail.
Compared to the average of many years, is there anything unusual about this cold air mass, sir?
- The cold air appearing in April is not unusual.
However, in terms of intensity, this cold air mass is at an average to strong level, which is relatively rare in the same period in April.
In the past 10 years, on average, there have been 1 to 3 cold air waves in April each year, with up to 4 waves in some years.
Sincerely thank you!
