Forecast of the number of storms and tropical depressions from now until the end of September and rainfall developments

AN AN |

It is forecast that from now until the end of September there will be about 1-2 storms and tropical depressions in the East Sea. Rain in the Northern region and Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh tends to be scarce.

Ms. Nguyen Thanh Hoa (Climate Forecasting Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting) provided the latest forecasts on weather and climate trends in September.

Ms. Nguyen Thanh Hoa provides information on notable weather trends in September.

According to Ms. Hoa, the current El Nino state is maintaining strong intensity with sea surface errors in the central equatorial and eastern Pacific regions higher than average by about 1.8 degrees Celsius in the last week of August.

It is forecast that the El Nino state will continue to be strong to very strong with a probability of up to 95% in the last months of 2026 and will last until the first half of 2027.

It is forecasted that in September, there is a possibility of 2-3 storms and tropical depressions (including storm No. 5 recently) appearing in the East Sea area, of which there may be 1-2 storms affecting the mainland area of our country" - Ms. Thanh Hoa said.

A representative of the Climate Forecasting Department added that the forecast trend of the national average temperature is generally about 0.5 - 1 degree Celsius higher.

Regarding the hot weather situation, except for the early days of September when there is widespread hot weather in the North and Central regions, in the coming time the hot weather tends to gradually decrease in intensity and will no longer last. Especially in the Central region, there will still be some widespread hot spells concentrated mainly on the South Central Coast coast, causing some significant impacts on people's livelihoods and production" - Ms. Hoa advised.

Regarding the rain trend, according to Ms. Thanh Hoa, if the past August recorded total rainfall in the Northern region and Thanh Hoa - Quang Tri generally higher than the average by 50 - 100%, then in September, total rainfall in the Northern region and Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh is forecast to be lower by 20 - 40%.

Although there is a shortage of rainfall, it is still necessary to be wary of heavy rains occurring in a narrow area and in short periods, accompanied by extreme weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, strong gusts of wind, causing trees to fall, localized flooding, damage to houses and infrastructure" - Ms. Hoa warned.

In addition, the total rainfall in September in the Central Highlands region also tends to be about 10-20% higher, the Southern region is slightly short of 5-15%, and the remaining areas are generally approximately average.
