According to information from the Department of Irrigation Works Management and Construction (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment), drought and water shortage for agricultural production may occur locally in the South Central region.
According to the forecast, the basic water source is to ensure water supply for planting in the Summer-Autumn crop of 2025 according to the plan. However, some projects in Quang Ngai, Phu Yen and Ninh Thuan provinces are at risk of water shortage with a total affected area of 1,100 - 2,100 hectares. Of which, Quang Ngai and Phu Yen are about 500-1,000 hectares and Ninh Thuan is about 100 hectares.

In particular, the Ong Kinh lake area (Ninh Thuan province) proposed to stop production in the summer-Autumn crop of 2025 because the lake's water source has run out. In case the hydroelectric reservoirs in the Vu Gia - Thu Bon river basin do not operate properly, there is a high risk of saline intrusion in the downstream area and pumping stations are interrupted in water retrieval capacity, affecting a total area of about 2,000 hectares.
With the water source in irrigation and hydropower systems and forecast of rain in the coming month, the Department of Irrigation Management and Construction predicts that irrigation works in the North Central region can ensure water supply for planting in the Summer-Autumn crop of 2025. However, it is also necessary to be on guard against the risk of drought and localized water shortage during the peak dry season.
For Ban Ve hydroelectric reservoir, during the peak period of water supply to downstream in June, it is necessary to increase discharge to avoid the risk of saline intrusion in downstream areas and affect the drainage of works along the river.
In the northern mountainous area, last week, due to the impact of heavy rain, flooding caused damage to rice and crop growing areas in the provinces at the highest time: Tuyen Quang 184.9 hectares; Bac Kan 355.7 hectares, Ha Giang 45.75 hectares; Thai Nguyen 16.7 hectares; Cao Bang 190.46 hectares.

The Department of Management and Construction of Irrigation Works said that in the coming time, the Department will closely coordinate with scientific service units under the Ministry to strengthen monitoring of information on the upstream of the Me Cong River, will continue to update water resources and assess the water resource situation in 2025.
