THANH HOA - Authorities have requested Happy Star Accessories Production Company Limited and two other companies to stop operations due to waste discharge into the environment.

On October 23, speaking with Lao Dong, Mr. Dao Van Bac - Head of the Office representing the Nghi Son Economic Zone Management Board in Bim Son Industrial Park - said that the Board has requested to immediately stop discharging wastewater directly into the environment and stop the operations of 2 other companies that are renting factories from Happy Star Accessories Production Company Limited (Happy Star Company).

Previously, residents of Quarter 10 (Bac Son Ward, Bim Son Town, Thanh Hoa Province) were very confused and uneasy when they discovered that the wastewater from the sewer of Nam Khu A - Bim Son Industrial Park suddenly turned an unusual red and pink color, accompanied by a very unpleasant burning and foul smell.

The incident has made the locals extremely worried, because the locals here mainly use drilled wells and dug wells, and the polluted stream could seep into the water entering the well. Furthermore, the stream flows to a nearby dam to serve as irrigation for agricultural land.

According to Mr. Tran Nam Chung - Vice Chairman of Bac Son Ward, Bim Son Town, after receiving feedback from the people, on the afternoon of October 20, the local government and related units went to inspect the situation to clarify the matter; currently waiting for the results of water sample analysis to come up with the next plan.

According to the inspection team's work results on October 20, visually, it was found that the discharge point of Happy Star Company, located in South Zone A - Bim Son Industrial Park, near the discharge sewer had a smell and color corresponding to the smell and color at the drainage point that people reported.

Continuing to check the wastewater tanks in the premises of Happy Star Company, we discovered that there were 3 wastewater tanks with colors and odors corresponding to the colors and odors coming from the drainage system as reported by the people. On the walls of the company's tanks, there were signs of drilling the walls of the tanks to install water suction pipes. In the area of South Zone A - Bim Son Industrial Park, there was no area with similar colors and odors.

Mr. Dao Van Bac said that on the morning of October 21, a working group chaired by the Office representing the Nghi Son Economic Zone Management Board at Bim Son Industrial Park, in coordination with representatives of Bim Son Town People's Committee, Bim Son Town Police, Bac Son Ward People's Committee, Bac Son Ward Police, representatives of Tan Phuc Hung Group Joint Stock Company (the unit exploiting and operating the industrial park's infrastructure), representatives of Happy Star Company and representatives of Ward 10 continued to inspect the field and documents related to the implementation status of the Happy Star Company's auxiliary material factory project.

The inspection team agreed that the discharge of wastewater directly into the environment without treatment is the responsibility of Happy Star Company. At the same time, it requested to immediately stop discharging wastewater directly into the environment, stop the operations of 2 other companies renting factories from Happy Star Company, wait for the results of water sample analysis to have a basis for advising the competent authority to impose penalties according to regulations, and only when conditions are met can production resume.
