Demarcate, isolate the fire
Regarding the incident of a concentrated landfill in Quang Ninh commune (Quang Tri province) burning silently for many days, causing environmental pollution and affecting people's lives, on April 9, Mr. Tran Xuan Tinh - Chairman of Quang Ninh Commune People's Committee said that he had just sent a document to the Quang Ninh Public Works Management Board (the unit managing and operating the landfill) and the People's Committees of Ninh Chau, Truong Ninh, and Truong Son communes to continue to overcome this incident.
According to Quang Ninh Commune People's Committee, previously, the unit had an official dispatch requesting the Quang Ninh Public Works Management Board to mobilize forces, vehicles, and equipment to extinguish the fire. However, due to hot weather and strong winds, the fire has not been completely resolved, continuing to generate smoke and dust, seriously affecting the environment and people's lives in the surrounding area.
Currently, to thoroughly handle it, the Commune People's Committee requests the Quang Ninh Public Works Management Board to continue to strengthen forces and vehicles, coordinate with relevant units to synchronously deploy fire fighting measures as soon as possible.
At the same time, organize zoning and isolation of the fire area; thoroughly handle smoldering fire points, prevent fire from spreading to neighboring areas and maintain 24/24 hour scene monitoring until the incident is completely resolved.
Previously, the Office of the People's Committee of Quang Tri province had a document requesting the People's Committee of Quang Ninh commune to urgently take the lead and coordinate with departments, branches and related units to deploy a plan to thoroughly extinguish the fire, not to let the pollution situation drag on, and at the same time requested to report the implementation results before April 13, 2026.
According to records, functional forces are currently mobilizing vehicles to transport soil to cover the fire points, combined with leveling to isolate and extinguish the fire. However, due to the large amount of garbage and prolonged smoldering fire, further time is still needed for handling.
Request communes to coordinate
According to the leader of Quang Ninh Commune People's Committee, this landfill used to serve the collection of domestic waste in the old district area. However, before the complicated developments of the fire that have not been completely controlled, the Commune People's Committee decided to temporarily stop receiving domestic waste from Ninh Chau, Truong Ninh, Truong Son communes and within the locality until the incident is resolved.
This is considered a necessary solution to limit the risk of fire spread, while reducing pressure on the landfill area where incidents are occurring.
In parallel with that, the Commune Economic Department is assigned the task of coordinating with the landfill management unit to continue handling the incident. At the same time, advise the Commune People's Committee on solutions to manage and operate the landfill safely and effectively in the coming time.
People's Committees of Ninh Chau, Truong Ninh and Truong Son communes are also requested to coordinate, support and allocate funds to the Quang Ninh Public Works Management Board in the process of waste treatment as well as fire incident remediation.
Quang Ninh Commune People's Committee requests relevant units to seriously implement tasks and promptly report difficulties and obstacles for guidance and handling.
Today, April 9, at the People's Committee of Quang Ninh commune, units including the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment, the Fire and Rescue Police Department of the Provincial Police, and related departments and agencies such as the Commune Police, the Economic Department, the Office of the Commune People's Council and the Quang Ninh Public Works Management Board will hold a meeting to discuss solutions to handle and thoroughly extinguish the above-mentioned fire point.
Previously, on April 7, Lao Dong Newspaper reflected the situation of a concentrated landfill in Quang Ninh commune catching fire for many days, causing environmental pollution and affecting the lives of people living about 1km from this area.
The fire not only caused air pollution but also posed a potential safety risk for vehicles when black smoke spread across the Bung - Van Ninh expressway about 400m away. According to local leaders, the cause of the fire is still being verified, initial assessment may involve flammable materials mixed in domestic waste.
