In the past 2 days, the weather in the North has changed to drizzle with thick, white fog. In the days leading up to Lunar New Year, trading activities tend to increase. This weather pattern has greatly affected people's daily activities and hindered their visibility when traveling on the road.
Dense fog in the North also caused many flights to be diverted or delayed on January 24.
Weather forecast information, especially fog, is eagerly awaited by people.
Regarding this issue, according to Dr. Truong Ba Kien - Deputy Director of the Center for Meteorological and Climate Research, Institute of Meteorological Sciences, Hydrology and Climate Change, the cause of the fog in the past 2 days is due to the previous cold air mass remaining in the east, changing its properties and bringing moisture in the morning and at night.
Meteorological researchers further analyzed that the strong cold air mass that will impact tonight, January 25, has a completely different nature than the previous cold air mass.
"From tonight, January 25 (December 26), a strong cold air mass will flow northward, with only a temperature inversion causing localized showers, but the amount of rain will be very small and end quickly. From tomorrow morning, January 26 (December 27), the foggy conditions like yesterday and this morning will basically end," said Mr. Kien.
Mr. Nguyen Van Huong - Head of Weather Forecast Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that the fog situation will peak on January 24 - 25. From tonight, January 25, cold air will return, causing scattered showers and thunderstorms in the Northern and North Central regions.
"Cold air will cause rain around the night of January 25 - January 26, ending the dense fog. Then, from January 27 - 29 (ie December 28 to the first day of Tet), there will be fog in some places in the early morning but it will not be significant, and there will be sunshine in the afternoon. The weather will be very cold, the mountainous areas of the North will be very cold, and there will be a possibility of frost and frost in the high mountains" - Mr. Huong said.
According to the Head of Weather Forecasting Department of the meteorological agency, the severe cold will peak from January 26 (December 27) to January 27 (December 28) and last until January 28 (December 29).
According to Dr. Truong Ba Kien, in the long-term forecast of fog, around January 30-31 (ie the 2nd-3rd day of Tet), there is a possibility of another cold front strengthening slightly, slightly shifting to the east, causing drizzle and possibly reoccurring fog.
