Floods in Thai Nguyen exceed record 1.09m, warning of widespread flooding

After a period of heavy rain, floods on the Cau River (Thai Nguyen) peaked at 29.9m, about 1.09m above the historical level in 2024; flooding is forecast to last for the next 3-4 days.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, currently, floods on the Cau River and Thuong River (Bac Ninh) continue to rise; on the Luc Nam River (Bac Ninh) decrease slowly; water levels on other rivers in the North are rising.

The water level at 1:00 a.m. on October 8 on the rivers is as follows:

On the Cau River at Gia Bay station 29.9m, above the historical level in 2024 (28.81m) 1.09m (at 3:00 a.m. on October 8); at Dap Cau station 6.05m, 0.25m below alert level 3;

On Thuong River at Cau Son station 17m, above alert level 3 1.0m; at Phu Lang Thuong station 6.97m, above alert level 3 0.67m;

On the Luc Nam River at Luc Nam Station 5.3m, warning level 2.

On the Thai Binh River at Pha Lai station 4.57m, below alert level 2 by 0.43m.

In the next 12 hours, the flood on the Cau River at Dap Cau station, on the Thuong River at Phu Lang Thuong station will continue to rise above level 3, the upstream of the Cau River (Thai Nguyen) at Gia Bay station will fluctuate at the peak, then decrease and at the level above the historical flood in 2024 of 0.19m; flood on the Luc Nam River at Luc Nam station will continue to fall below alert level 2.

In the next 12-24 hours, the flood on the Cau River at Dap Cau station will continue to rise above alert level 3, at Gia Bay station will continue to drop and remain above level 3; the flood on the Thuong River at Phu Lang Thuong station will rise and exceed the historical flood level in 1986 (7.52m).

Floods on the Luc Nam River at Luc Nam Station continue to decrease and are at alert level 1-alarm level 2.

From now (October 8) to October 9, floods on rivers in the Northern region will continue to rise, during this flood, the flood peak on the Thai Binh River (Hai Phong) will rise to alert level 2; the flood peak on the Thao River (Lao Cai), Lo River (Tuyen Quang), Hoang Long River (Ninh Binh) will rise to alert level 1-alarm 2, some rivers will be above alert level 2.

Widespread flooding in Thai Nguyen provinces ( Maintained for the next 3-4 days), Bac Ninh, Lang Son, Cao Bang and the risk of flooding in low-lying areas along rivers, urban areas in the Northern region.

Risk of riverbank and river dike landslides, risk of flash floods on rivers and streams and landslides on steep slopes in the mountainous areas of the North.

Real-time warning information for areas at risk of flash floods and landslides is provided online on the website of the Department of Hydrometeorology at: https://luquetsatlo.nchmf.gov.vn and in a separate bulletin warning of flash floods and landslides.

The warning level of natural disaster risk due to floods is level 3. Floods on rivers cause flooding in low-lying areas along rivers, affecting activities such as waterway transportation, aquaculture, agricultural production, people's lives and socio-economic activities.

The meteorological agency noted that forecast and warning information is calculated at the expected regulation level of discharge from upstream reservoirs. The Hydrometeorological Agency will update bulletins when there are changes in the discharge flow of reservoirs.
