Many landfills reach overload, Da Nang seeks new treatment directions

Landfills in the South of Da Nang City are close to the threshold of overload. The pressure of treating domestic waste is increasing, posing an urgent requirement for long-term solutions.

Currently, Tam Xuan 2 landfill (area belonging to Nui Thanh district, former Quang Nam province) still receives about 500 tons of garbage per day. The total designed capacity is large, but the remaining volume of garbage storage is not large. It is expected that the reception capacity will reach the threshold in the near future. Meanwhile, Tam Nghia landfill, also adjacent to the South of Da Nang City, has been operating for more than 16 years, and the storage compartments are close to the design elevation. With the current amount of garbage, this area will also have to close the landfill in the same period.

Maintaining the operation of the two landfills is a short-term solution to ensure environmental sanitation. The treatment process is strictly controlled. Measures to limit odors and leachate are strengthened to reduce the impact on people's lives.

At the same time, Da Nang promotes replacement projects. The Nam Quang Nam solid waste treatment area (old) is being accelerated. The project has a significant treatment capacity, accompanied by a leachate treatment system. When completed, this will be the main receiving point, regulating the amount of waste in the Southern region.

In addition, waste treatment plants in the North and Hoi An are being dismantled to soon operate. Supplementing treatment capacity is a key factor to reduce the load on existing landfills. However, whether the progress of restarting waste treatment plants and burning waste into electricity is as directed and expected is still... waiting.

In the long term, Da Nang city is oriented to switch to a modern waste treatment model. The landfill rate will gradually decrease. Waste burning technology for electricity generation is considered a key direction. This model helps reduce landfill volume and create energy to serve economic development.

A large-scale waste incinerator has been planned in the Southern region. Land fund preparation is being implemented to be ready to attract investors. Along with that, propaganda is being promoted to create consensus among the people.
